  • I'm going to trialing some gas permeable lenses, however, I often get allergic to contact lens solutions.

So was looking for alternatives to cleaning lenses.

Has anyone tried this ultra sonic cleaner?

Curious about those too, seen ultrasonic cleaners briefly mentioned on Lens101 and other forums but not a lot of details about them!

I'm back in the mysterious waters of solutions after treating myself to some bargain (year) vial coloured lenses and (monthly) Freshlook Colorblends. An ultrasonic cleaner sounds like a good idea! The reviews look good too.

Don't opticians put contacts through an ultrasound cleaner if you're having problems with lenses?

There are identical Bogue copies on ebay which doesn't inspire confidence; I'd pay a tenner at the most to try it. (Here's a review of one: http://www.frmheadtotoe.com/2008/03/ultrasonic-lens-cleaner.html)

Some are saying that they make yearly/monthly contacts last longer but I'd proceed with caution with that idea.

*Seems like some have issues with it not lasting very long, the Bogue: this one has limited reviews but can't see it in the UK: http://www.amazon.com/Automatic-Contact-Lens-Cleaner-System/dp/B001RDD2QI/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t

You have to bear in mind that all an Ultrasonic cleaner will do is break up deposits and not kill/keep nasty bugs under control. You'll still need a disinfecting solution as well.

  • They claim to do everything & more than regular contact lens solutions.

I have read that these cleaners don't last long, but I think that's mainly due to usage. Also, if you buy from somewhere like Amazon, at least you can return it if it does break.

They might claim it, but using water on contact lenses is dangerous and like I said, there is no anti-microbial action. It's asking for a serious eye infection - Avoid!

Incidently, with RGP lenses, you're much less likely to have a reaction to solution as the preservatives don't absorb into the lens material. Plus you need a 'cushioning' effect from the solution which you wouldn't get with what you are proposing to use.

  • It uses saline solution not plain water.

Saline also has no anti-microbial action so you'll still need to soak them overnight in solution. Also, how do you sterilise the ultrasonic unit itself?

  • From what I understand, the unit is cleaned using an all in one solution & left to air dry.

If I was to use this ultra sonic cleaner, I wouldn't use plain water.

I do remember quite a few years ago, using a sterilising unit which heated up to a high temp. It was a really good piece of equipment. Just can't find it on the internet, although the optician said she would try & source one.

Autoclaves fell out of common use because they damaged the material and denatured protein deposit, effectively cooking it onto the lens surface.

The ultrasonic cleaner would only replace the mechanical rubbing action nrmally used (and probably not as effectively), not the need for any any soaking solutions.
