Living in an Apartment Block - Noisy Neighbours!! Help!!

Options
I live in an apartment block and the people who live above me are VERY inconsiderate. Its a new build so all the doors are fire doors on chains so they slam shut if you let them go. These people are constantley letting them slam. Also when they leave/enter the apartment building they make a lot of noise, occaisanly they play loud muisic with the windows open. By the communual from door there are the letter boxes and if there is any junk mail they just leave it by the front door and dont even bother putting in the bin! Its driving me crazy!!! What steps can i take, because if it continues I might snap and turn physical!!!

Please Help

just go and knock on and ask them if they can keep the noise down please, im sure they havent noticed that they are !!!!ing you off :)

Its like the old lady across the road from me she got burgled about 2 years ago and every time she goes out she puts her alarm on and within 30 minutes of her leaving the god damn alarm is going off!! I work from home so you can imagine what its like she goes out for a couple of hours its going off all that time! its happened the last 2 days on the run! I feel like going over there and ripping the box off her wall and stamping on it!

Talk to the landlord? Or if you've bought the flat, do you have a management committee or agent?
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • Ive bought my flat but the people above are renting the previous occupier (who owns the flat) is living in another country. The noisy ones I think are friends with the owner so would the owner do anything anyway??

There is a managment company but they just deal with the cleaning of communal areas I Think.

Check your lease - there may be a clause about noise and / or sub-letting.

However, some people have different ideas about what they "should" do - for example with junk mail, or closing doors, so you may have to accept that not everyone will meet up to your expectations.
  • I agree people might have different ideas about what is considered acceptable or considerate behaviour. But sometimes the noise is just totally unacceptable. I will check my lease later on when I get in from work.

Its possible that they have no idea that letting the door go is making it slam and bothering you could you just have a word about that?

I know it seems unlikely but If they are young or maybe its the first time they have lived away from home then perhaps they need it pointing out to them?

  • Yes they are young (Early twenties) so that could be the reason. I've put up a notice in the communual hall area and I will see if it has any effect on their behaviour. Is it too much to ask to watch tv in peace of a evening!!

    Hi Red Richie,

My thoughts go out to you, I live in a apartment block which is a new bulid and have the same doors as you. We have two very noisey neighbours one comes in at 5.00 am a plays loud music and then bags the doors. then the other person slams doors etc. We had a word with one of them and it has got worse to the point we think he is doing it just to annoy us. All I wanted to say is be careful if you confront them as they could make it worse. Not all people have the same standards as you.

Hope it sorts itsself out :D

How about putting a recycling box near the post boxes? Yes, it may be you who takes it out each week but they may well use it if it is easy to use and handy.

Have you thought about starting an partment comittee or neighbourhood watch. there may well be several of you who feel the same about the noisy ones and joining together can really help you feel less frustrated.

As regards the slamming fire-doors, do you mean the doors in communal areas? How about asking (as many times as necessary!) your managing agent to fit closers on the doors so they do not slam? I know this was done in my block (built 2005) shortly before I moved in, at the request of some of my neighbours.

As for the general lack of consideration from your neighbours, I'm not sure what to advise there. My neighbours are lovely (and my block has good sound insulation between flats...)
