Are you exagerrating about how bad such an amp would sound. I'm not even a beginner yet and have never heard an electric guitar being played so do you think this would be suitable for me? If I become even slightly competent I may upgrade but could I just buy a new amp and keep the guitar even if it is cheap?grahawk wrote:With 3W amps you certainly won't get loud but it will sound horrible. I bought the Encore guitar mentioned on the Argos board which comes with a similar amp. Very nasty. You can't expect much with such cheap guitars but good for beginners, Mind you if you haven't got a decent Strat to compare it to you probably won't notice too much.0 -
Honestly it really the most terrible thing I've heard from an amp. Problem is that except at the lowest levels, which is almost too quiet to use it, it adds distortion/fuzz, overdrive but while these effects are great these here it's really bad and extremely boxy. I imagine this amp will do exactly the same thing. If you want something cheap and small try this Yamaha amp:

I've just clicked on the original ebuyer link supplied at the top of this thread and it comes up with a message saying that this product is no longer available but on checking the electric guitar section I see http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=91391
Now this is looks like the same package just with the price bumper up as feared. Can anyone remember if this is so and can it still be considered a bargain with the possibly dangerous amp?0 -

The link you've given is a bass guitar. The original one was a six string strat copy.0 -

I have reported it to my local trading standards. You may wish to have your amplifiers checked out by a competent electrician. Hopefully this was a "one off".
Before everybody starts getting worried...
Assuming that the amp is marked as double insulated (has no earth and is marked with the identifying symbol - a square within a square). The wiring arrangement you describe, providing the unit satisfies the 'double insulated' requirements for electrical insulation, is acceptable and is perfectly safe.
If the unit is not double insulated and has an earth connection, the wiring arrangement is acceptable providing the chassis is correctly earthed and no unearthed metal parts can be accessed externally.
Fitting a fusecarrier to the live and a switch to the neutral is not inherently unsafe, indeed there are many appliances which do not have any mains switch at all.
The reason for the apparent error switching the neutral, especially for double insulated items, is that many parts of the world do not have polarised mains plugs - live and neutral can be interchanged depending on which way the plug is inserted into the socket. Another example of this here is the 'figure-8' lead which can also swap live and neutral, depending how it is connected.
If you are in any doubt, have the item looked at by an electrician - but be aware that any internal modifications (including modifications to mechanical protection of any wiring to satisfy the double insulated requirements) may cancel the manufacturer's product liability if any subsequent injury occurs.0 -

The amplifier is not double insulated. However the metal chassis on mine is correctly earthed. The wiring as originally supplied was non compliant with electrical safety standards.0 -

Im sure I saw guitar for around £60 in Argos tho!!In this trusted place U can erase
Every tear that ever rolled down your weary face
All the time U waste in that paper chase

Delivery - the one bug in internet shopping! Anyone seen an accoustic electric guitar, want one for my son's 7th birthday, shame the ebuyer accoustic ones dont have pickups, nice price. Thanks Grahawk for the link above, amp is good but the guitars are costly, although like most things you get what you pay for, but on this site you just like to pay a little less!0
