Condensed milk

I think that evap and condensed milk are too different Lynz. Condensed is thick and sweetened, whereas evap has been boiled to reduce it (I think). I would imagine you need to stick to condensed for this recipe to work.0

You need to be careful nowadays. There is a low fat condensed milk which when opened is like what we think of as evaporated. You need the thick sort by ?Fussells amongst others - tends to be in a shorter fatter tin than a large tin of evaporated. long time since i bought any but I seem to remember white labels with blue writing.0

you can also now buy tins of carnation caramel (ready caramelised condensed milk) , I used to spend hours boiling the tins of condensed to make a caramel sauce.....0

i figured this would be the case
Never mind, must put some of that caramel on the shopping list for next time:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
Quick Google found this; untested but sounds ok:
"If you have a can of evaporated milk on hand, you can make a very good approximation of condensed milk. In a saucepan, combine a cup of evaporated milk with 1-1/4 cups of sugar. Heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Let cool. You can refrigerate the mixture for several days."
Also:
"Is there a substitute for sweetened condensed milk?
The best make-your-own version is to mix 1 cup of evaporated milk with 1-1/4 cups of sugar in a saucepan, heat until the sugar is completely dissolved, and let cool. If you don't have evaporated milk on hand either, you can make your own by slowly simmering any quantity of milk in a pan until it reduced by 60%.
Sweetened condensed milk has a shelf life of about a thousand years, though, so pick up one or two cans on your next trip to the market and you’ll never need a substitute again (it’s a good idea to turn the can over every two months or so, to keep the sugar well dispersed throughout the milk)."0 -
