1/ What sort of car rental cover are you talking about? If its just cancellation most travel policies will cover this as standard. If you require liability etc - you are better sticking with car rental co

Hey Leigh-Anne, Thanks for your reply. The car rental insurance would be to cover us in any collision, theft, damage etc etc...

  • We have two holidays booked for the next year, one USA and one Europe, so I decided to have a look for an annual policy which covered all my pre-existing medical conditions. I have been using medi-cover for the past few years but they do not provide annual policies. Having trawled through all the postings on here I gave Cover My Travels a ring. They will not cover me for my Rheumatoid Arthritis because I have regular 6 monthly check-ups. I was told if the check-ups were annual they would cover me. I have just had a look at the Post Office and was surprised to find that inspite of all my medical problems (too numerous to mention) I did not answer `Yes` to any of the 5 questions they asked and I am, therefore, fully covered for an annual policy for £126 for me and my husband. Now I am worried that if I take it out will I be covered as nothing will be mentioned about any of my pre-existing conditions which have normally cost me hundereds of pounds to insure. Does anyone have any experience of claiming for medical expenses from the PO. I think the policy is from Fortis.
Also the Emergency Medical expenses are covered for up to £10,000,000 but it quotes only £800 for hospital benefit. I know £800 won`t go far in an American hospital so I don`t understand that bit. Surely the £10,000,000 includes hospital treatment, doesn`t it? Please help, I`m sinking under a sea of small print!

I think you can only get a definitive answer from the policy provider. Why not give them a call and ask any questions that worry you. If they answer favourably ask them to point out where in the policy this is confirmed or whether they will confirm in writing. That is probably the only way to put your mind at rest.
  • Hi, can anyone help with this please? My son age 24 is off to Asia next month, travelling about and also will be doing a bit of teaching. Visiting several countries and staying for 3 or 4 years probably. The longest period for insurance I can find is 18 months, after that it appears its tough luck if anything happens! Apparently I can't renew it for him after the 18 months as he will then not be resident in UK. Its the medical side thats of concern, if anything happens we will be in difficulties. Any suggestions or advice would be very gratefully received.

Hello. My mum age 76, hip replacement op year ago (no problems) otherwise good health, is going to Italy end of December for 5 days, and Im looking for suitable travel insurance for her. Have come across EHICplus and looks very cheap compared to other travel insurance for her age group. Anyone recommend EHICplus, considering her age and hip replacement?
    All advice welcomed . Thanks

    Hi There,

Myself and my fianc! are leaving London after 3 years to head back to our home in Australia via a 3 week road trip across the U.S. in December.... the question has now come up about travel insurance:

    1) Is it worth finding a travel insurance company that also covers us for car rental or should we take out car insurance seperatly with the rental company?

    2) Should we get single or multi trip cover? We've heard that for the U.S. it can be cheaper to get multi trip...

    Thanks in advance!

You can only get insurance from where you reside, andf no anyway - I am a Brit living in Florida and when I travel back to the UK I wish I could buy there as travel insurance is much more expensive here in the USA

Beware that most policies will limit your time traveled outside the UK 60/90 days usual.

    1. Hospital Benefit is what they'll give you as cash for being hospitalized not for medical costs. (to cover Phone calls, etc)

    2. Call the insurance company' customer service and check that you will be covered DO NOT TAKE IT FOR GRANTED and learn the hard way - here in the US you are responsible for the bills.

What he needs is what is called an Ex-Pat policy - use any search engine for Ex-Pat Insurance and check they cover the country(ies) he will be staying in - almost every travel insurance does not cover for working (paid or unpaid) as you are not a traveller after (most companies say 30/60/90/120 days) yo are a resident.

Also they will probably only cover for the period of his visa so if he has a 12 month visa they'll cover for that and if he extends his visa he'll need to renew his policy too.

I have a travel insurance question.

As far as I can tell under 18s cannot get travel insurance in their own right.

So if you have a 16 year old travelling with their aunt, aunt who already has her own travel insurance how do you get cover for the 16 year old? Can she travel on a family policy even if no-one else covered by the policy is travelling?

    Thanks!
