Garden trellis on party fence

In law, you may not do anything to a shared or party fence without the consent of the other owner. You may not paint it, put nails in it, attach climbers or trellis to it ... nuffink!
However, you are at liberty (as has been said) to place a fence of your own in front of it, or grow climbers up a purpose built screen, attach screening panels to stakes placed inside your own ground.
There is one quick and cheap way to provide privacy through the summer months or while waiting for a hedge to grow. Simply erect a washing line across the part of the garden that is overlooked, then go to your nearest charity shop. Buy two or three old sheets or duvet covers for a couple of pounds, peg them firmly to the washing line and just leave them there for the summer. Tie large pebbles to the bottom corners if the wind lifts them while they are hanging.
If you have access to pallets, and have a handyman in the family, they can be taken apart and put back together to provide a cheap fence while plants grow bigger to take over the role of providing privacy.
I too value my back garden for seclusion but I opted to go to a specialist nursery and bought really large plants to get privacy in quickly - but it isn't cheap. Hope some of that may be of help to someone.0 -
You have my sympathies Springchicken. We've been negotiated with our nextdoor neighbour since last summer over a boundary.
Basically we live in a terraced house and between us and nextdoor on one side there is a 3ft wall which is original from when the house was built which is not in the best state of repair. We wanted to knock it down and put up a fence and were willing to pay for this ourselves even though its shared. However she would not hear of us taking away a valuable original feature (her words not mine).
So what we have agreed is we have put up 6ft fence posts on our side of the wall using metposts, the bottom 3ft is a fence panel and the 3ft that she will see from her garden is trellis and we are going to plant climbers in the trellis. She wouldn't let us have 6ft fence panels. So at last we will have a bit of privacy in our garden!0 -

Actually by law it's none of her business what fence you put up on your land as long as it doesn't exceed 2 metres in height.Living on Earth can be expensive, but it does include an annual free trip around the Sun.0 -
to be honest i nailed a trellis to my neighbours fence as they decided to replace a 5ft panel with a 3ft one. I want my privacy so went out and done it a week after they put it up. I was letting it wind me up too so thought sod it what can they do its on my side so they'd have to climb into my property to take my trellis down. or take me to court or whatever and what are the chances of that over a trellis? needless to say it has been there for over a year and they still reg talk to us and havn't mentioned it. so no problem. I say put what you like your side of the fence and attach to what you want and the worst than can happen is they complain about it. don't let someone ruin your garden and home privacy, we spent too many years hiding away indoors from the chavs next door who'd shout abuse through the fence. So you could have worse neighbours.0

I haven't taken down the bamboo, I painted it and it was hard work so I thought it could stay for while.
On Friday morning whilst doing the front garden, the neighbour at the back who hasn't spoken to me since putting the bamboo up came and chatted as though nothing had gone on, she didn't mention it once and neither did her husband when I saw him walking back from the shop, I think they are appreciating the privacy too...I mean me standing at the back door having my morning coffee at 6.30am is enough to frighten anyone, so all is well at the moment on the bamboo front.
On the gardening front..well is it almost done by my standards, just a wee bit of trellis to put up to support the sweet peas (I ordered them online and they looked quite poorly when they arrived, and so tiny, almost like a plug plant, I paid quite a bit for them and not happy with the quality, I tried phoning today and emailing the company, but the emails get bounced back and the phone never gets answered quickly enough and I'm not paying to wait on hold, so I am not holding my breath that they take off, and besides a cat decided he liked the look of them and rolled all over them:mad: ).
