um what about a free standing arboritum or pergola, we made one and its just trellis 9 inches in from their fence, and we grow honeysuckle up it. nosy neighbours are a problem, sorry for you.

What a great idea, how do you support it? Is that a daft question.

I do feel for my neighbour, shes just lonely and short of things to do. (I feel terrible just now for upsetting her, but my OH has come home from work early and says he likes the screening and the privacy, and is going to cover the whole of the back fence with it.., this trellis thing may just work instead if I knew how to support it.

    Handbags at dawn...

So many issues here. Clearly to be on good terms with neighbours is something everyone likes to do/be. Equally boundary walls, fences, hedges etc are a necessity. We all like to think we are entitled to a view but only when it suits us. I have a 6ft high hedge which no-one could get through, but the children's balls come over, (7 on Saturday). I know for a fact they have over 14 as I've counted them from a bedroom window, so I tend to keep them until I have about 10, then throw them back one after another when they have company.

Normally in a row of properties, as you stand with your back to your house, the boundary on the right or left is yours to do with as you please.

If the neighbour who objects to the 6ft has the "right" as it's his fence, there is nothing wrong with you erecting a double panel to a hight of your choosing, IMO.

I have just pulled out the deeds of the house, its a new build, and I have found that two fences, the one on my left if I stand with my back to the house is a shared fence, and also the one at the bottom of the garden which backs onto the neighbour, which I could see into her kitchen is also shared, (my garden is very small and an odd shape), the wall to the right is mine as I have no neighbours on the right, only a road. So I am entitled(if thats the right word) to put up Bamboo, its bothering me more and more this afternoon, I may post a pic to see if you lot would have done the same.

  • Do what we did. We installed a 6'x6' trellis 10 inches away from my neighbour's fence to allow climbers to go up. Except you want it higher than the fence. It works a treat and everyone's happy.

Thanks for all your replies ,really helpful .
I have whittled it down to 2 options either put up the 6 ft bamboo screen (was wondering if I can legally attach it to the party fence ?) or go for Vans option with a more closed in trellis, really like this idea. Is the trellis in your pic supported by metposts?
Have also ordered a 7ft arbor to go in front and will grow some nice honeysuckle over it ,only snag this will only cover 1 panels width.
I have only been in the property 3 months and its amazing how a once friendly neighbour can turn nasty over a few feet of fence !!
I sympathise with anyone in the same boat !!

  • I am not sure if you can attach the bamboo screen to the party fence, you can ask at the gardenlaw.com forum, they know everything. If you are allowed to attach it, just remember that when it's time to replace the fence the screen will have to come down with it.

We used metposts, yes, but you could just pour concrete into the holes instead.

Your arbour will do a good job too, maybe you can place it in the middle and use trellises at either sides? If you put a garden mirror at the back of the arbour it will make it look like a door leading somewhere...Just an idea. And yes, it is amazing how petty some people can be, good luck!

what about growing quick growing plants? bamboo plants are tall and grow quickly, you could plant them and they will form a screen, ditto willow.

My neighbour has some established honeysuckle and Keiria (sp) and I get them for free because I let them grow over and under the fence - so it's not always a bad problems - oh in return I allow her the use of my slugs and snails...I have far too many and I'm sure they visit me from her garden he he he...so next time your in my area - duck or a Mollusc may come hurtling towards you

You are quite correct, I am not able to put bamboo up according to the Gardenlaw forum if its attached to the party fence, So I gonna have to take it down...can I plant a hedge instead then? This is really stressing me out, its only a fence and I want privacy, but I want neighbour at the back to be happy also. I cannot afford to put up a new fence in front of the exisiting fence either. It would take about 9 6ft panels to do so.

  • As long as you don't attach anything to the fence you're ok, so yes, you can grow a hedge instead. You can chose laurel, holly, Photinia x fraseri Red Robin, Pyracantha if you don't mind thorns (it has small pretty flowers in the spring and lovely orange or red berries in the autumn), conifers, Buxus sempervirens, Viburnum tinus or Pseudosasa japonica (bamboo).
