Hi there
Sorry if this posts in the wrong place feel free to move.
Was wondering if anyone can give me some advice regarding putting up wooden trellis on one side of a 4 ft party fence.
The trellis is quite high 6 foot and would come 2 feet over the fence.
Is it possible to legally put the trellis up on our side without permission from a neighbour?
Many thanks

Only if it's your fence. Check out http://www.gardenlaw.co.uk0

I have in the past used 6 ft by 3ft trellis fixed to 2 inch fence posts which worked well, i put them in with metposts and being the smaller size they wasn't expensive.0

Your posts with your trellis attached on your land is fine. You grow whatever you like up your trellis,
but climbers have no sense of yours and theirs, and when your plants invade their panels, whoops, that's when you might encounter etc etc. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thanks for all your helpful replies.
I have the concrete posts with the slide in wooden 4ft fences .
Have asked neighbour if I can replace 2 panels at bottom of garden with 6 ft panels .
He has refused ,not taking into account the garden is on a slope so I have no privacy whatsoever .
Have suggested the idea of trellis to raise it another 2 feet ,can I attach wooden batons to attach the trellis on my side of the fence ,if it is a party fence ?Moneysaving? - I cant stop spending because of this site!0 -
How about attaching some of that willow screening to the fence? It would give you more privacy than trellis plus is much cheaper, and I don't think he could object to that as it's not classed as a "permanent" structure“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

Don't be too sure about not objecting, I have put up two panels of bamboo screening on my fence, and my neighbour isn't speaking to me now, even though I told her I was going to do it:rolleyes: . The fence at the back is a party fence, and it is a slatted fence so I could see into her kitchen:mad: , I'm happy but shes not (I hate upsetting people, life too short - but I/we as a family wanted a wee bit of privacy)."Wisdom doesn't automatically come with old age. Your neighbour is just nosey.
Most people don't want to see inside other people's bathrooms, bedrooms etc. or even see them in the garden.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I'm pleased you said that, I thought someone may say otherwise, I mentioned it to her on Friday that I was going to do it, but she knew my husband was away at the weekend, but she didn't think for one moment that I could do it myself, with the aid of a glass of wine and a whole lot of swearing under my breath I did it.
I don't like upsetting people, but I couldn't put up with it any longer, shes an ok neighbour but if my children make too much noise (in her opinion) in the garden she is out standing at the fence looking at them - I keep my children under control, I appreciate others may not want/like children playing but I feel like I live in a goldfish bowl."Wisdom doesn't automatically come with old age. I would do exactly the same as you Merlot, we're all entitled to privacy in our own homes and gardens. I can't understand why she should have such a problem with it anyway unless, as olly said, she's just a nosey old so-and-so“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

um what about a free standing arboritum or pergola, we made one and its just trellis 9 inches in from their fence, and we grow honeysuckle up it. nosy neighbours are a problem, sorry for you." I'm just a simple janitor, who can control people with my mind"0
