We planted phyllostachys bissetii bamboo in huge cold water loft tanks that we sunk into the ground. They form a very dense barrier, they are only on your property and they can grow tall quickly without invading the rest of your garden. Plus they are evergreen so no worry during the winter.

This isn't our garden but its the image from the site we bought the plants

Saying that, 2 years down the line, our neighbour has decided she would like to raise the level of the fence after all to stop their dog escaping  Can't win can ya?

Thanks Van1971 for your input, which hedge is a really quick growing one, but I do not want Leylandi.

I just phoned my OH and told him what Garden Law forum has said, and his reply was, if the neighbour takes down the trellis along the top of the fence which has been placed there to screen and is attached to the party fence then my OH will take down the Bamboo.

    This is gonna be fun...not!

Who actually owns the fence between you?

  • I was going to put the bamboo screening up but dont want any trouble attaching it to the party fence
So Ive decided on met posts right in front of fence with very closed in trellis and some fasy growing climbers to cover.
Merlot think you have more of a problem as you have to cover a lot more fences than me ,so might not be cost effective for you .

I'm sooo fed up today, I am seriously thinking of letting my garden go to rack and ruin, no point in trying to make it nice and we can't use it without privacy...

Tried to take a pic to show you the fence, but the camera has decided not to work, should have stayed in bed this morning.

  • I know how you feel ,its really important to have privacy in a garden ,they are a sanctuary after all.
Cheer up Merlot a solution will come along ,have you given thought to the trellis idea?

  • Bamboo grows very quickly but like someone elses said, you need to put a barrier around the roots otherwise it spreads like crazy. Be aware that it drops sharp leaves, so if you have young children or pets it may not be suitable.

Maybe you should litter your garden with lots of tacky garden gnomes (sorry if I've offended any garden gnome fans) and maybe some loudly painted garden furniture (like hot pink). Maybe she'd reconsider then.
