  • Hope someone can help - and apologies if this has already been dealt with but this is a very long thread and I can't read it all!
I recently switched from BT to Virgin for my landline. 18866, which I have been using for some years, still works, but I have to dial a much longer number to start off, and then the charges seem much higher than they did when we were with BT. Is there a better/cheaper service than 18866 for using with a Virgin line?

I registered with 18185 yesterday and received a subscription confirmation e mail with my customer number. When I try to make calls I get a "you need to register with 18185" message and when I try to log in to the 18185 site I get a message saying "The account number/telephone number you entered is incorrect."

Should my subscription start immediately? Any ideas why its not working?

    Many thanks

As you now have your A/C number, try logging into your account and checking your details.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thanks Heinz. The mystery deepens. I've found that I can log on using my mobile number but not with the land line number. When I try to register the land line number (which I did list when I subscribed) I get a message saying 0xxxxxxxxxx The phone number is incorrect.
Thanks for your help, any further ideas?

When you're logged in, check the 'Your telephone numbers' section. By the sound of it, you should see 2 numbers listed there - your landline number and your mobile number. Is the landline one entered correctly? You can enter it as an additional number if it's wrong (and log back in and delete the wrong one next time).

This is the message I'm getting. I've checked and rechecked the number and it is correct!

Below field(s) show the telephone number(s) registered with 18185. You can add/delete telephone numbers and/or switch the tariff message on/off. If you have moved house and wish to replace your current number with your new telephone number please first add the new number before you remove your old telephone number! Should you have registered with one telephone number only and you wish to delete this number (i.e. cancel your subscription) please select the menu option "Unsubscribe from 18185".

01xxxxxxxxx The phone number is incorrect

    Phone number: Description **
    1. 07xxxxxxxxx Tariff message *

    2. 01xxxxxxxxx Tariff message *

    Thanks again

I cannot register with any of these sites, I get "This phonenumber is not allowed" when I enter my landline number.

The only "odd" thing about my number is that it used to be a Vonage VoIP number but is now attached to a BT line. The number 01282 505xxx is reported as being owned by Gamma Telecom Holdings LTD according to Google.

I contacted 18185 but they had no interest in helping me.

My daughter (on Sky Talk Unlimited) tells me the 18185 prefix still works ..... at the moment.

However, I have programmed her Orchid to use 0808 1 703 703 at certain times for certain calls and she hasn't reported any problems.

BTW, it looks like those on Sky Talk Unlimited could use 18185's 020 8180 2828 geographical gateway number for such calls too.

excellent, just what I was looking for, thank you for that. Is 18185 a good service? The prices look ok and as other half sometimes needs to call abroad from mobile their mobile option sounded worth signing up for.
