Hi thread, I just wondered does anyone know if you filter used vegetable oil and put it straight into your car, would this have detrimental effects?

I only heard about this concept this morning on a program called 5th Gear, and i'm so tempted to try it i'm tempted to buy a £100 car and put some oil in it!!!

Out of interest, I don't think you can use Biodiesel in any of the recent or current VAG (Audi, VW, SEAT, Skoda) TDI PD Diesels with the Pump Duse injector system - could be wrong but sure I have read that somewhere... Shame because I like the idea of a 50/50 mix with pure supermarket veggie oil. Almost worth getting an old indirect injection diesel to try it out!

Have now used 350l of Biodiesel made by "express Biofuels" (tel:07977 456835) in my 2.0dti Zafira so far & it is still running great.
P.S. it's 78p per litre at the moment.
  • I used to run my old nova TD on veg oil. My mate ran his pug 405 and my other mate ran his rover 218 on it as well. i used to fill my nova up with the stuff and just add £5 of diesel just to help it starting in the morning. i found that my car ran better on veg oil than on diesel. DO NOT USE IT IN NEW DIESEL CARS. You will kill the diesel pump in seconds. I would never use it on the newer type diesel but any of the older ones should be fine..

You know its now against the law to use it. ( Unless you pay the tax for it)

Oh someone i know someone who uses old used cooking oil in there landrover and it runs fine...

So what do you do with a new diesel? Do you run it on a higher veg oil/diesel ratio?

I would suggest you contact the supplier and ask him if your car will run ok on the bio fuel.

I don't but I've read that it starts to gel at higher temperatures than petro-diesel, so needs a higher proportion of petro-diesel in with it

Use at least 20% petro-diesel unless the Biodiesel has anti-gelling additives & you will be fine.
