And the 700L on the bag means 700 litres. Most composts are sold by volume not weight.

Oops! I meant 100 litres. Sorry.
  • Hey arkonite_babe....

Love the wall-sided greenhouse - looks fantastic & looks like you had some great results earlier on in the season. I bought my own polytunnel from eBay (£69.99) earlier this year & have had great fun growing so far... My freezer is the fullest it's ever been!!

I am looking to grow some salads over the winter months - anyone got any sure-fire success planting ideas? As all money saving experts, I guess I'm after maximum output!!! Thanks to all for sharing information on this forum - was one of many places I was inspired!!

PS - forgot to say. I ripped my polytunnel cover on a bit of broken glass when putting it up & the place I bought it from replaced it free of charge!!!!! Forgot their name - bau something I think, but thanks to them too!!

I will post some images of my crops soon - this is first post!!

So far I've no potatoes ready to harvest - I was a little later in planting them so I guess that's why. My early variety has flowers though! My peas and carrots are coming along slowly and my lettuce was doing really well until a snail had a great feast and ate them all :-(

I've just picked a courgette and it is HUGE. My dad says he's never seen a courgette as big as it :D. He thought it was a marrow when he came out into the garden :rotfl: . The marrow plant is right next to the courgette plant mind. I took the pic on the side of the pond my dad made incase anyone was wondering.

I'm going to enjoy eating that :T . Should do a few meals for me and it's so cheap this way :j . Ratatouille anyone :rotfl: ?
By the way I'm sorry if the pic is huge. I have tried to make it smaller but I'm not sure if it's worked  .

    Evening all

Here is a pic or 2 of the produce that was waiting for me last week when i got back after 3 weeks away

Someone was supposed to look after the watering for us and take any produce they wanted -but didn't do either -so i had one heck of a lot of sorting to do when i got back -but that little lot were my reward :T although i could have done without 6 cucumber all at the same time :rotfl: not that they are getting wasted -they are keeping in the fridge much better than shop ones:D
Doom n Gloom -think the courgette on the left is in the same league as yours :rotfl: it was really lovely too :j
I now have loads more beans , carrots and potatoes i have fetched in and lots more beans, carrots, patty pans ready... ooh and most exciting i will be fetching in my first aubergine soon -its about 8" long so far :j and there are more coming.
My tomatoes are just starting to ripen -well a few are - i have loads out there and loads more flowers
The main thing to suffer whilst i was away was the melon plants which i don't think will make it -but i will try again next year when hopefully there will be no emergancies taking me back to the UK for 3 weeks..
Its great to see everyones gardens starting to give rewards... am i really sad that im allready planning what im going to grow next season :o

This is supposed to be a cantaloup melon,BUT it looks like an onion so no melons this year folks, they are the ones outside that were eaten by the slugs.*This must be an onion sqaush.*
That is not the only muck up this year,I was given another greenhouse,so to add it to the existing one I had to move the existing one to make room, dissaster, all the seedlings got mixed up tomatoes included, the outdoor ones were potted up for the greenhouse and the greenhouse ones were put in the garden.Gourds and butternut squash are out there somewhere. The runner beans were dug up twice along with the climbing french beans, now we have 5 runners and 2 french all with a few beans on so all is not lost.
Most other things are ok cellery, leeks red cabbage, onions, caulis down to the last 2,sprouts(just making little sprouts)and late planted dwarf beans to replace the ones lost.
One of the toms,is great the fruit is just turning,it's Red alert,Photo to follow.
Some good news, next door in exchange for me showing him the basics in the garden, is letting me have a plot on his huge garden(4 times the size of mine)

*Dont tell me its an Atlantic giant pumpkin,I lost one somewere,it will have the roof in.

Last year I picked more mini cucumbers than I could quickly eat. I found that wrapping them in a little newspaper and keeping them in the fridge helped them store well and stopped that horrible slimy skin condition which starts to appear when they get past their best.

Last year I allowed my cucumbers to grow to the lengths of those you buy in the shops which resulted in fewer cucs growing, plus they tasted slightly bitter. This year I'm picking them off at half the size and the difference in taste is amazing, plus the yield is much higher! :D

    If it's a melon where's my onion squash?:rotfl:

Next year every thing is having it's own label tied around the stem.

I can see this having another photo to show what it turns out to be.:o

My gerkins are at ground level and corgettes on the bench with strings to climb(I know they should be the other way):o and I have just got new specs,
More to come on this in the next few weeks.

    On the tomato front,just picked 3 today:j
