Hello people. Just come out of lurkerdom and want to confess that you lot have started something. What began as "let's grow potatoes in an old bin to try to get the kid away from the PC for a bit" has now become potatoes, carrots, beetroot, onions, radishes, tomatoes, herbs (had been growing these for a few years, but have expanded the varieties), runner beans, sugar snap peas, peppers, chillis, salad leaves, lettuces, gooseberries, blackcurrants, rhubarb and broccoli! I think for a first year this has been a tad over ambitious, but I'm having fun.

Most of it is in tubs as the planned veg patch had to be put on hold due to a coal tit nesting right over it (was going to cut the shrub back to get more light to the patch) and I didn't want to disturb her.

So far we've only managed to actually eat herbs and salad leaves, but we have 5 little tomatoes on one plant and looks like lots more have set on that plant, so hopefully lots more veggies to follow.

Have no clue how to load a picture yet, but if I work it out I will.

    Hi

I have just bought a new camera and I am not sure how to post pics yet, but will try to do so in the next couple of days.

This is my first year, but I am currently growing (all in pots on my patio):

    Herbs:
    Oregano
    Thyme
    Garlic Chives
    Chives
    Parsley
    Coriander
    Purple Sage
    Mint Basil

    Salad:
    Rocket
    Spinach

    Fruit:
    Strawberries (in a hanging basket)
    Gooseberries
    Blueberries
    Tomatoes

I was wondering if I should cover my strawberries (in hanging basket) with fleece? Would the sun still get through?

I have just had to take out one of my strawberry plants because it had an airborne fungus!! Luckily I was able to replace it with another because it isn't too late in the year.

I don't have a vegetable patch which is why everything is in pots but one of the good things about planting in pots is that when I go away, I can take the ones that haven't fruited, or that I am keeping for next year, to my friends house for watering :)

I haven't got a picture yet but I will take one soon. I've got the following on the go in the ground:
    Carrots
    Beetroot
    Courgettes (planted out seedlings)
Marrow (for my dad mostly, planted out seedlings)
    Sweetcorn (planted out seedlings)
    Spring onions (planted out seedlings)
    Cucumber (planted out seedlings)
    Peas
    Lettuce (planted out seedlings)

    The following is in pots:
    Golden courgettes
    Tomatoes
    Strawberries
    Corriander
    Chives
Cat grass (for rats and dog)
    Pepper plant

Need to get in the ground over next few days:
Onion sets (I wil only just get away with doing this)
    More carrots
    More beetroot

Want to do still if I have the chance:
Potatoes (if possible and not in ground)
Pumpkin (in a very large pot)
    Garlic
    Spinich
Parsnips (may have to wait till next year now)
    Fennel
    Kale

Hrm I would like to grow everything I eat to be honest but don't have the room for all of it :rotfl: .

I only have a 3 metres by 2 metres plot at the moment that is done but do have another one the same size next to do that I need to sort out as there are still weeds.

Now we've re-arranged out veg tubs we've got more space than we thought (not a lot though) and been thinking about having a tub of carrots (the little dumpy ones maybe) some spring onions, possibly spinach.

Are we too late for any of these or is it ok to put seeds in now ?

    Hi mary..

No you aren't too late... :T i have all of those on the go now..but plant more every couple of weeks so you get a steady supply. Only set a tiny bit of spincah at a time as it will bolt and go to seed really quickly..my first lot did

Thanks MrsMcawber - we've grown carrots and spring onions before years ago when we had a big veg garden but never tried them in pots.
Spinach will be a 'first'. We were talking about what extra things to grow and may as well be the stuff we eat. OH had said about popping spring onions and carrots around other plants as well as having a tub full of them.
We'll get some seeds on Monday.

Carrots are happier in pots as its easier and softer for them to push through.. and they don't grow wonky and split..as there are no stones to make them fork...and carrot fly can't fly higher than 12-15" so if they are in tubs they are often out of reach to the little devils :T

    Hi mrsmcawber

I am a newbie gardener and I am going to do some of the little carrots too (in pots), so thanks for the tips on those.

Is there anything you can do to stop things from going to seed? My coriander went to seed pretty quickly. I have spinach in - planted from seedlings - and I really don't want it to run to seed to quickly if there is something I can do to prevent it.

    Thanks :)
