Selling free range eggs? How much do you charge?

The hen house came with this property when i bought it 8 years ago. It's large enough for 50 birds, so I have kept a few and sold the surplus eggs. There was a huge demand, so got a few more chickens... and so on. I was making a nice little proffit at £1 a doz even. But chicken food was stable. Now like everything else, it's got out of control. Huge price hikes almost weekly. So you have to charge £1.80 or so just to pay for the food.Penelope_Penguin wrote: »Do you mind my asking why you keep so many hens
(as I notice that you have a further 20 eggs incubating atm). Why not just keep enough hens to keep you and your family in eggs?
Penny. x
It's easy keeping 50 birds, a little more mucking out.
The incubating eggs are Rhode Islands. I will be raising pure breeds and selling the chicks for people who want to buy pure breeds. Or making up trios, or hen lots for those of you who want a chicken or two in the garden... Just an experiment at the momentNO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! N9eav, is there any scope for you to sell the eggs at work , or church?
Do your customers return the boxes, I tend to take back any boxes as I know it will help keep costs down as well as recycling
A lady at my slimming class sells punnets of strawberries....they have polytunnels and grow loads. She also does a lovely strawberry preserve :drool:Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

To be honest I have no shortage of customers and often sell out. I could sell 100's more but I just don't have enough. Most people bring the boxes back. Other at work save me boxes anyway from their supermaket eggsNO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -

Do you need some sort of license (from environmental health) if you sell more than a certain amount of eggs/chick(ens) ?The hen house came with this property when i bought it 8 years ago. I charge £1 for half a dozen eggs from my girls. I selll approx 3-4 dozen a week.
If you keep more than 50 birds you have to register with DEFRA. It is an easy procedure and think you can do it on line i think.
You can sell eggs to friends and family (from the gerden gate) legally.
You cannot sell to the general public. You have to be registered and are inspected yearly. You need to have to abide by lots of different rules and regs.#440 sealed pot challenge0 -
I was doing a little search for hen houses and found this site. They are the cheapest I've seen and look okay. I was searching how to build one on Wikihow!

I buy a dozen large free range from a farmer who comes on local market once a week, and pay £1.89. They`re the best eggs we`ve tasted.0
