I love some of the ideas in this thread. I would really like to reduce what we spend on food, but the hubby is a fussy so-and-so, doesn't like eating things past their dates or if they are slightly the worse for wear etc. If/when I become a SAHM, he'll be eating what I put in front of him, no worries about thatIn a better financial position than ever before (thank you MSE!). Moved back to Scotland and now trying to keep debt-free!0

I would buy on a £1.04 budget ( 4p over but I'm sure you could find 4 pennies tucked somewhere):
Penne pasta 17p
mozzerella 40p
tomato pasta sauce 18p
instant noodles 11p
can pineapple in juice 18p
then pick some dandelion leaves on the way home:D.
Breakfast: pineapple in it's juice
lunch : soupy noodles with dandelion leaves chopped up and wilted mixed in for vitamins!!!
dinner : pasta with tomato pasta sauce and mozzerella melted through
For a £1.50 budget for 4 people :
Penne pasta 17p
mozzerella 40p
tomato pasta sauce 18p
can pineapple in juice 18p
yoghurts 29p for 4
noodles 22p
dandelion leaves (free)
Breakfast: pineapple chunks in juice with yoghurt
lunch: soupy noodles with wilted dandelion leaves
dinner: pasta with tomato pasta sauce and mozzerella melted through or baked in the oven. You could utilise your ( or your grannies) garden and make a trendy side salad of dandelion leaves with any flowers you might have ( viola, pansy, nastursiums etc) but no dressing.
it would be easier if it was £1 a day for 7 days and you could then get a bit more variety with £7 eg add in Basics Sainsbugs teabags, buy eggs69p,batter mix10p rice45p, potatoes99p, teabags30p, milk4lt99p, curry sauce9p, frozen mixed veg65p, 4x yoghurts29p, bread47p, pasta17p, mozzerella40p, can pineapple18p, tomato pasta saucex236p, noodles 22p, red kidney beans17p, vegetable cup soups 17p, mixed fruit jam29p.
It would be a bit lacking in variety & seasoning but not too bad.Grocery challenge October: £228.28/£250.00 NSD 4 ( not completed)
Grocery challenge November : £291.65/300.00 NSD 10
Grocery challenge December : £0/240.00 NSD0 -
I read through this and was amazed how the prices of some these days are nearly double!I was thinking exactly the same thing!
11p for a tin of beans, 19p for a loaf of bread and 45p for a tin of corned beef! Those were the days, you couldn't buy those for less than £1 now.
Edit: I've just looked on Tesco's site and it would cost £2.23 now and that's for the cheapest value stuff.
Beans - 28p - more than doubled in price
Bread - 47p - more than double
Corned Beef - £1.48 - more than tripled in price! :eek:Dum Spiro Spero0 -
ok having a look, for 2 people for one day, it gets bread heavy tho
mashed banana on 2 slices toast and tea
salmon paste sandwichs and tea
beans on toast and yes you guessed it tea
all for the grand total of £2.10 according to my supermarket that includes uht milk and value everything you can
not very interesting and definitely wouldn't fill up my OH for long, but it'd do for emergenciesNonny mouse and Proud!!
