Not so much an experienced MSE'r, still got my training wheels on :rotfl:
This is something I cook regularly & it goes down a treat! We usually get 4 portions out of these measurements - 2 x Adult main meal & 2 x leftovers for lunch next day so I guess you could halve the ingredients again - even cheaper :D

Bacon Risotto - 97p (approx) obviously depending on where you shop!!

    Arborio Rice - 300g = 28p
    Streaky Bacon x 6 = 49p
1 Meduim Onion = 10p ? (not quite sure exact price, but taking an average from previous posts!)
    100g Frozen peas = 8p
    1 ltr Chicken or Vegetable stock (2 x stock cubes) = 2p
Pinch of Salt & Pepper - ? Personal Choice
Knob of butter - ? Wouldn't know how to calculate this!!

    1. Finely chop the onion. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil and a knob of butter in a pan, add the onions and fry until lightly browned (about 7 minutes). Add the chopped bacon and fry for a further 5 minutes, until it starts to crisp.
    2. Add the rice and stock, and bring to the boil. Stir well, then reduce the heat and cook, covered, for 15-20 minutes until the rice is almost tender.
    3. Stir in the peas, add a little salt and pepper and cook for a further 3 minutes, until the peas are cooked. Serve sprinkled with freshly grated parmesan and freshly ground black pepper.

I prefer to use smoked streaky bacon as it give the dish a lovely flavour, but this will cost extra pennies. I did not calculate the parmesan as I never put it in (I don't like it!) but I left it in the recipe for the adventurous amongst you!!
Also, if you are feeling flush, you could throw in a handful of mushrooms and or frozen sweetcorn for the last 3 mins of cooking.

    Bon Apetit :j
  • Do you think it could be done in 2011, a meal for £1 or maybe £1.50 ?

but i want it for 4. Hope i'm not being too specific:T

Here is my suggestion for a days food for two people.

Breakfast Boiled egg and soldiers for breakfast :egg 8p each, slice of bread approx 3p (Both value.) x 2 = 22p

Dinner Packet of Savoury Rice = 28p
Half Packet of 8 sausages = 24p (Chopped and added to rice)

Tea 2 rolls from pack of 12 value = 6p
2 slices of cheap ham from deli = approx 40p

Pud and snack 4 value yoghurts = 29p

    Grand Total = £1.49

Not quite sure how nutritious the meals would actually be though!

The original premise was though that you couldn't use part of a larger pack. You had £1 and nothing in. No cheating :)

This thread has more lives than Lazarus, how many times has it been resurrected!

I did notice something with shock, in 2004 a tin of corned beef was under 50p, now they are 3 times that!

Assuming there is nothing in the store cupboards and I'm working from scratch heres my list (everything fron Mr T):

    1 banana 12p
    1 value strawberry yoghurt 15p
    1 value chicken noodles 11p
    1 value pasta quills 17p
    1 value pasta sauce 17p
1 tin value kidney beans 16p
1 value strawberry flavour whip 12p

    total spend £1

    menu:

    breakfast: banana with strawberry yoghurt

lunch: noodles with a scattering of kidney beans from tin

dinner: kidney bean pasta in sauce with strawberry whip for dessert

    drinks: water

the worrying thing is that bread and milk are both prohibitively expensive.
