This adsl router is for adsl and not cable lines. It doesn't explicitly say but the adsl router is model WAG54G which is for adsl lines. I know because I brought this package sometime ago at £81 from Simply. If people were after the cable one then that model number is WRT54.
You can tell which one it is as the WAG as one antenna whereas the WRT has 2.
Also people have been having random luck with connecting the laptop card with the router, despite them being from the same manufacturer. I, for one, have not had any problems but some people complain that the connection drops constantly. I don't know what would cause this.

It is a cable router, NOT an ADSL router.
If you have a look in the technical specs from Amazon site: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001FS9MK/103-2830987-3123043?v=glance
you will see:
Ports/Buttons: Internet: One 10/100 RJ-45 Port ; LAN: Four 10/100 RJ-45 Switched Ports; One Power Port; One Reset Button
It is not WRT54 as well. It has a different chipset (according to a customer review from Amazon). It only has 1 antenna (while WRT54 has two) which might cause the bad coverage.CityHunter wrote:tab99_uk

It will not work on your adsl tiscali. It only works on NTL or Telewest... (i.e. cable line).
Or you can use it if you have an adsl modem with RJ45 output (not USB one)0 -
thanks going to ring them up tomorrw and cancell it.

How did you find this out?
Also - you could do it with a USB modem if you have a network connection on your PC. Would just need a cable from that to one of the ports in the router. A bit harder to set up but can be done.

Someone said this:
" I have dsl and it uses PPOE instead of cable whichuses DHCP. Thats the only thing i had to configure for this router. "
I.E - it looks like you can get it to work on ADSL OR cable...?Being bored is so boring Im bored of it... :rotfl:0 -
If it keeps dropping out (a known thing):
"The system is extremely easy to set up. I had it up and running in less than 15 minutes. I currently have 1 desktop connected to the router via an Ethernet cable and 1 laptop running on wireless. The router is connected to an NTL broadband cable box. The only problem I had initially with the wireless was that the connection kept dropping. After a quick search on the web (never one for reading the manual), Linksys suggest un-ticking "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network" in the wireless network connection properties. Since I did this it’s worked perfectly. Good quality router and card, supplied with everything needed to get the network running."Being bored is so boring Im bored of it... :rotfl:0 -
tab99_uk,
Sincerely apologies for giving you misinformation. I think I'm going blind, as when I checked that link I didn't see the model number on it. Which is why I gave that information. This is a new model which I am not familar with. I hope I don't cause you too much inconvenience.

Is it not just a router? If so, it doesn't matter what connection you have. If it were a router/modem, then you'd need a connection specific product, but it's not (or doesn't appear to be).
In this case it's just a router that is at the heart of your network. You still need a modem (adsl or cable) to dialup, which plugs into the router. So whether it's a cable or adsl modem, it doesn't matter, as either way the modem plugs into your router."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
