I'd have a go at sending it back. How gutted would you be if you were Deidre (or the sender)? Mind you, I'm not sure I'd try quite so hard if it was a decent bottle of Single Malt ;)

I would notify the company and ask them to send a prepaid label or collect it. They then have 28 days to do so, after which it legally becomes yours. (At least that was how it used to be!! One month if you tell them, six months if you don't).

my goodness, where are your morals?
surely you cant just send it back because you dont like it and keep it if you do, that is awful. errors are made and mistakes do happen.
imagine how horrified you would be the next time you saw dedrie and she never thanked you for it, you would then start thinking she was ungrateful and she would probably think you didnt appreciate all the hard work she had done.
No, i would have to try and return it just for my own piece of mind and if there was no way i could or was told to keep it then fine, id done my best, i cant help it but thats the way i am.

This very thing happened to me 2 weeks ago, with a delivery of flowers from M&S which was left on my doorstep, they were not for me and I spoke to all my neighbours, I then called M&S who said unless the person who sent them contacts them they can do nothing. He said to enjoy the flowers. So I would do the same with the Champagne.

As it has been clearly labelled wrongly, I would contact the sender for them to make whatever arrangements they need to make to recover or not recover their goods.
I am not sure if this situation is cover by the "unsolicited goods” regulations/act. If it is, you serve written notice that they are to collect the good within the next 30days, if they fail to do so, you are entitled to deem the goods as a gift and thank them for it. If you do not contact them, I think it is six months. It is not your responsibility to get the goods back to them, but they have to recover the goods themselves or via an agent. Failure to do this means you have stolen the goods and so could face the consequences.

I think there are two possibilities that you can fall foul of if you simply keep the goods and use them as you will without the above procedure:

    1. “Sealing from persons unknown”, though you do know who the supplier is.
    2. “Thief by keeping”
Both are criminal offences and carry various consequences in law.
I would let the supplier know and used the “Unsolicited goods” route to cover my back.

Do everything in my power to return them or find the person they were rightly intended for. She has obviously done something to deserve it, where I have not.

Ah, you see it would depend on one thing for me:

    - If it had the appearance of being sent from a business, as some sort of corporate gift or customer reward, I would keep it on the assumption that they've made a mistake and can write it off / send another if needed.

    - If (as the OP suggests) it seems to be from an individual, perhaps someone thanking a friend for a favour, I would absolutely feel obliged to try my hardest to inform the sender of their mistake. I could not drink champagne that could have been bought by someone with genuine emotional attachment to it.

Contact the sender, if there is a contact name address etc., say I received the bottle Request sender to arrange re deliver within 7 days, after that it's mine! Yep! I would drink it if not collected within 7 days. Champagne is over rated, can get a very good traditionally made wine for 3.99 from most supermarkets .:D
