cigarette run going by coach?

hi. i know that some people may not agree with this thread because of 'health' reasons:rolleyes: but here goes. my mum and dad are pensioners who both smoke (quite a lot) but obviously cigarettes are dear in this country. they recently came back from spain (first time abroad) but couldn't bring many back for themselves as my mum had too many clothes in her suitcase:D .
my dad was thinking of going abroad to get some cigs for them but would rather go by coach as he hates flying and doesn''t like driving too far now.

however as we live in yorkshire he would prefer to go from hull if possible as it is a 10 hour trip by coach to dover which wouldn't be too comfortable for him.i know a northern company used to run trips abroad for booze cruises a few years ago but i have looked on the net and can't seem to find much information.
soooo..... i was wondering if anybody had any ideas or had used a company for a trip such as this as it would save them a great deal of money. thanks a lot.

i think you have to weigh up time/cost. french fags are not greatly cheaper so the cost and time could outweigh the benefits. maybe a day return flight when ryanair has a freebe would b e better.

when i went to girona (nr barcelona) i was talking to a guy who arrived that morning, grabbed a taxi to the shop and came straight back - its happening everywhere!

My brother - before he gave up - refused to buy when abroad because he only smoked a lot more if he had a stash. He said he actually wasn't much better off in the end.

A couple of West Yorks coach companies have packed in over the last couple of years (think Longstaffs was one of them) - maybe still one or two doing "shopping trips" rather than "fag runs" - Yorkshire Post used to have offers from time to time.

Major point - it's a loooong trip by coach/ferry (think the ferry has outside "smoking room") so would need to stock up on patches. As TB suggested, prices likely to be higher than Spain (probably e8 to e10 a sleeve), so could be a better idea to have a mucky weekend (lol) in Benidorm.

Dunno if it's still there, but Alicante airport had a Tabac on the concourse just before you go into the airport - Beni prices rather than Aldeasa +e4 a sleeve "duty free" (actually EU duty paid, but duty free sounds cheaper). Would need to book a flight back a few hours later though, wouldn't have enough time to dash out to the concourse and back in on a turnround.

One of my work colleagues does this a couple of times a year, but I think the coach she gets goes down to Dover into France, and over to Belgium, rather than across from Hull. I will ask her when I see her, but I have a lousy memory, so if I don't post back in a few days, PM me and remind me.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

Ciggies are quite expensive in Spain. Were about €38 for 200 last time I bought any, anf with the euro so strong against the pound the savings are not as good as they used to be.

I used to do the ciggie runs to Adinkerke when I smoked but from London. Coach to the Eurostar then into Belgium. Was still a very very long day. Catch the coach at 6am, home about 9.30pm.

hi again, thanks for all of the replies so far, i will show them to my mum and dad. don't think i've quite got the hang of quoting someone's post, but thanks to MANATHOME for giving me the idea in my head of my parents having a mucky weekend:eek: lol. certainly some food for thought to help them decide whether to give it a go.
    any more replies gratefully received.:D

Where was that Kriss - were quite reasonable in Minorca a few weeks ago (superkings e30, various JPS black/red, royal crown around e24). Was expecting higher prices, but were around Greek-dosh (would rather have done Greece, but wasn't really open).

Har de har - serves you right for asking "mucky fags" questions...

Surprised we haven't had a holie molie visit yet - "doncha know mama and papa could could visit the living dead in bourney-mouth for the same price instead of all that smoking stuff". What the hell, I smoke - may as well let the tax+spend to$$ers subsidise my holidays...
