Just wondering- to the others who have posted - did you all send a letter cancelling the agreement to fitlife, lyle hill and the amc? If you didn't then you need to do that asap, use the link provided by kayleigh above, which will take you to the letter drafted by trading standards. This is very important.

Hi, the link no longer works!
Do you still have the drafted letter?
Also where did u get all the addresses to send to?

    Regards

    Pete

    hi people
i also received another letter from fitlife telling that my account will be handed over to a debt collection agent(botherd)
THEY WANT ME TO RING THEM, temted as that may be i have been advised not to, and just ignore them. APPRENTLY i have untill the 22nd of august.
if there reading this BRING IT ON
  • Hi all,

Until this month I have been, stupidly, paying my £16.53 a month, but have still been getting letters threatening debt collectors. I rang them and they said that it was because i had used my name as my reference on my standing order & that they had to phone the bank up to trace who I was! I changed my ref last month to the correct on that is on my membership card. Now I have cancelled it after reading all your posts to give me the confidence to do it!
My point is, if they can't track your payments when you HAVE paid, how do they track you when you don't?
    Maggie
  • Just to add that they had been taking my money from the bank no problem for about a year then all of a sudden i had 3 debt collector letters as they hadn't received payment (although they had-they just couldn't find it in their system! A bit worrying to say the least!).
They were so rude on the phone when i tried to tell them I had actually paid that now i have no qualms about cancelling. (Anxious, yes, but morally i feel I am definitely in the right.)

An update: I have received replies from AMC & ECI, both passing the buck, and saying that they are not the ones I should be writing to. They also suggested that i should keep up my payments(as if!!)
I wrote to Fitlife at the same time as to the others, but today, my letter was returned to me, uopened. I sent it recorded delivery but noone was there to sign, and noone called for it.
Very strangely, the address I sent it to (PO BOX 90, Gloucester) had had a sticker put over the address with:
    A SMIT,
    REDRO,
    SCHOOL LANE,
    BRIMPSFIELD
    written on it.
    Still it was undelivered.
Can anyone tell me of any other address i can write to for Fitlife please? Or even an email address? I sent it to the address that i had on my paperwork, so I'm wondering if they have done a bunk?.....

I haven't had any non payment demands yet but i am expecting one any day now. They have NO chance of getting any more of my hard-earned money from me. Enough is enough and I am going to fight them to the very end.

Also, has anyone had any more dealings/letters/threats etc about this gym 'freebie' (I use the term loosely)?

    Maggie
  • Apparently mine's gone to the debt collectors - they are giving me a final, final, final chance though to avoid that and contact them by the 30th. (oops thats tomorrow isn't it? Oh well, shame)

I'm still concerned though that this will effect my credit record, even though i will dispute it and fight to get it clear again. The thought makes me fume even more!

Anyone who needs a copy of the drafted letter / addresses let me know.

Hey Maggie, check my comment made on an earlier post: "I found this info on google. It's 2002, so may no longer apply?:
Associated Members Club (AMC) Ltd & Fitelife Ltd share the same registered address in Cheltenham. Doriana Smit is the boss!" hmmmmm same old Smit so it seems....
  • Thanks for the info. interesting about the Smit link.
I have googled the name and came across another forum which has people with exactly the same complaints. They have another address for Fitlife which they say they have found on a consumers site:

    Name & Registered Office:
    FITLIFE LIMITED
    THE BRITANIA SUITE
    ROYAL MAIL HOUSE
    TERMINUS TERRACE SOUTHAMPTON
    HAMPSHIRE
    SO14 3FD
    Company No. 03481044

They say that the companies Associated Members Club (AMC) Ltd
and Fitlife Ltd. are registered at the same building in Cheltenham, (which we know), and share a boss – Doriana Smit (which you told me). But, it says, phone AMC and you’ll be told that Fitlife ‘has no phonelines’– you can only write.
The person in the post apparently lost his job. He faxed Fitlife’s ‘revenue management’ firm ECI to cancel. It replied that Fitlife’s agreement was ‘non-cancellable’. AMC, which is essentially a club, said its membership agreement didn’t bind him, so there was no need for cancellation information. (??don't understand that)
Fitlife, which arranged the finance, said 'X' would have received ‘sympathetic treatment’ if he’d contacted it directly. (A likely story!!) It said that its credit agreement had ‘no small print’ but included a ‘standard clause’ about rights. The writer commented that this is precisely the problem – it doesn’t spell out the consequences. Mr X certainly didn’t realise he was locked in for three years, as it wasn’t explained. The OFT is investigating his case apparently.

I'm going to write again to Fitlife, at this Southampton address and also the PO Box in Gloucester, plus I shall email them.

Thanks to all for the info - much appreciated. Maggie
  • RE: Associated Members Club

Fortunatley I am not a victim of this scam! Associated Members Club have recently been targetting Thornbury, but when you look have targetted Herefordshire (where they got into trouble with trading standereds after being found to be in breach of the Consumer Credit Disclosure Regulations because they failed to give consumers a 'pre contract information' sheet prior to signing actual agreement!.
I think, among some of the advice given you could do one of a few things:

    Contact Trading Standereds.

    Tell all your friends

Or what I am doing: using the technology available to me in the quickest way possible:

Using FACEBOOK to advertise this appaling practice!!

    J Neal
