Chimenea

Our terracotta chimenea got blown over in the gales early this year and sadly is now more.
The only ones I seem to find are the cast iron ones.........don''t mind having one of those but would prefer terracotta. If I have to have a cast iron one, where might I get one without it being decorated with grapes and vines ? I just want a plain functional one.
Anyone have any ideas ?

have you asked on your local freecycle??as you will be amaze of what they have and you can ask if some one has one.
i went to my local garden center last week and they had plain ones there so it might be worth looking around them happy hunting

Hadn't thought of freecycle..........wouldnt have thought someone would want to give one away but stranger things happen.

I got a plain one from Woolies last year

You have to apparently run the cast irons ones in for first few times so that the cast iron hardens

Thanks poppycat............ours is only a small branch of Woolworths but we can order through the store from the catalogue.
If I remember right, when we had our terracotta one we had to put sand in the bottom and light it a few times before use. Cooked no end of stuff on it and it was brilliant for heat.

I was in Wyvale Garden Centre today and they had a large variety of both Terracota and Cast Iron Chimneas.

Do you get the use out of a chinenea? I am tempted to buy one, but wondered whether it would be worth it. I mean, do you stay out in the garden a lot longer in the evenings, and what is this about being able to cook on them.

I used mine a couple of times last year mind you we didnt really get a Summer.

They do take a while to get hot though. I used off cuts and pallets to get the fire going

Do you cook on it like a campfire or barbeque with a grill over flames or do you have to rake out the fire and use the hot space like a little oven? I've seen them in garden centres but not been able to work out how to use one!
