Just to pick up on this point (not that it makes too much of a difference) but all HBOS credit card activations are handled by their own call centre in Cardiff. They're not outsourced.
Ah well, just thought is was all cards it must just be Visa then.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.
  • Varies by company I'd guess just like the whole Indian call centre piece, some companies like it some don't.

Scam is probably to strong a word, what about the phrase screw every last penny out of customers?

Exactly, just where is the scam/con ? Looking but I can't find it ! Whenever the word scam/con is used it's invariably by a new poster and isn't anything of the sort.

I disagree ... You have a choice, you either take it or you don't. End of ... That's not to say that their selling techniques can't be persuasive but you can say no ;)

Your assumptions are incorrect. I just see people doing their job and for the people listening to the upsell, it's just a time consuming inconvenience but not a scam, con or rip off.

Personally I think 0870 numbers are a complete SCAM.

They were termed "National Rate" numbers to make believe people that the cost was the same a telephoning a geographical UK number. This is NOT the case, and they can be charged at signifcantly higher rates. This is a SCAM by the telephone companies and I have heard recently that OFCOM have only just realised this and are making efforts to get the cost of 0870 nunbers reduced.

I refuse to dial 0870 numbers and urge everyone to use www.saynoto0870.com to identify an alternative number which may even be a freephone number.

I think I could put up with the B******t if I wasn't being charged for it.

Actually, when they were introduced this was the case.
