  • To view infra red you need infra red film. GATSO cameras do not use infra red film.

It is not an extra flash either. Registration plates use retroreflective materials to bounce light back at the same vector from whence it came. For this reason a flash needs to be close to the lens.

Road signage also uses the same principle, which is why your amber indicator light can be seen (by you) from several hundred yards away.

This stretch of road has 40 and 50 limits and numerous GATSOs along it in both directions. They all have one of the new poles. I`m sure they are directly linked to the GATSOs and speed as I think you would only need one ANPR camera in each direction to compare reg numbers to tax and insurance databases etc.

I have read about digital GATSOs but as far as I know the gubbins can still fit in the original case without additional parts.

The first installations of new digital camera housings were in Potters Bar, Hemel Hempstead and Royston. Additional sites in Letchworth, Stanstead Abbotts, Hemel, Water End, Borehamwood, Sawbridgeworth, Cheshunt, Radlett, Stevenage and Harpenden are due to be updated from October 2008.</SPAN />
Theresa Casbard, Head of the Road Safety Unit at Hertfordshire County Council, said: ‘We are the first Partnership in the country to place an order for these fixed digital cameras.
“As with existing cameras, they should continue to make a big contribution to casualty reduction and will gradually be rolled out county-wide. The number of people killed or seriously injured at camera sites has been reduced by nearly 65% since the Safety Camera Partnership was started in 2002.”
Apart from modifications to the housings, the upgrade to digital includes a separate secondary flash pole. This is a grey pole situated near to the main camera and is only erected to allow the new system to operate. It is not related to average speed or ANPR technology. Upgrading will cost around £11,000 for each site, depending on local conditions, with funding included in this year’s budget. The remainder of the sites will be upgraded in the next few years when funds become available and wet film cameras will be phased out as they become obsolete.
