A new bra - should it be immediately comfortable?

isitenough,
Like you my bras have been loose. I've put on weight over the last few years but haven't wanted to buy new bras because I was going to lose it again  .
I'm ashamed to say I've been wearing the same bras for at least eight years and the elastic has stretched and stretched until really they were just hanging from the shoulder straps.
Anyway I've finally admitted defeat and been to Debenhams to get fitted.
From wearing 32A I'm now 34D but the band is tight and I was dissappointed at the bulge over the top but the cup fits fantastically. After trying quite a few the most comfortable was a stretchy Tshirt bra.
On first wearing it all day I couldn't wait to get it off at the first oportunity because the wires were rubbing at the sides but after a few days it was fine.0 -
i guess if you've not worn the 'right' size underwired bra before, it can take a bit of getting used to. give it a little while if it's really new - have it on a big longer each day. after a while you really don't feel it. but if it's digging in and leaving red marks, that's different and really far too tight. i'd hope that bravissimo wouldn't put you in something that is that tight and uncomfortable, but no-where can be perfect. if it is seriously tight and leaving marks, take it back to the shop as they shouldn't have sold it to you after a fitting if it is a bad fit. you could even try the jordon range at asda - they're not 'great' bras but they are good for the price. then you can maybe get a couple of sizes and wear them a while without paying the huge prices!:happyhear0

Cheers for all the comments. I've really tried the size the lady said I was and I really wanted to get the right fit. Hopeful I will if I perservere enough. Obviously they all differ a bit but it really was too tight. The underwire isn't the problem! The bulging isn't the problem to me if it's comfortable. It's just a tad too tight. I'm hoping the next lot I've got will work.
I've tried them all on at the 'first' hook as I was told by the lady and also read here.
Vixarooni - many thanks for your comments. I 'can be arsed' to give something a go and am, nearly everyday so far! As I said before, I don't care what size I am so long as I can breath in it! I understand it's going to be tight for a while but not so tight it cuts me off. It's got to be at least bearable for me to want to buy it otherwise I know I'm wasting my money and won't wear it.
Anyways, I've droned on and on I know, many thanks for all the comments and I will succeed! Glad to know that I'm not the only one who has problems in this department.Thank you to everyone who posts comps! :A

Just a quick point but if you were measured as a 32FF then a 34F will be too small in the cups, try a 34G. I find some bras are really tight when i first get then but make sure you don't have the straps too tight as with it being much tighter around the back you don't need that any more.
I find this a really comfy bra

I had been wearing a 34B since I left school umpteen years ago, and as I'd put on weight asked at M&S for someone to measure me - she said 34B was fine. A few months later a friend persuaded me to go to a local lingerie shop & I was measured as a 32E!!!! I've put on a little more weight & now wear a 34E - I go back every three or four months with all my bras & the owner adjusts the straps & fitting. I do have to take my bra off for fitting, and probably would have died of embarrassment
if I hadn't had my first mammogram a couple of months before my first appointment. The local hospital send mastectomy patients to this shop, as she is sooooo good!

I just want to thank everyone for their fantastic advice on this thread :T :A
Having put on weight over the last few years, I've really struggled to get a good fitting bra and now I realise it's because I was buying the wrong sizes!
I've been wearing 44/46 DD/E sizes (depending on brand/style) but they never felt "quite right" so, having read this thread this morning, I bought some new ones in TKMax today and ended up with 38G and 40FF and they fit like a glove!!!
Even better, they were reduced to £3 each so a great bargain too :j“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
My problem is that I am a 34" in the morning but by late afternoon and evening I have become bloated (all over not just my stomach) so need a 36". Whenever I have had a bra fitting it has been during the day and the fitter has insisted that I am a 34E but as soon as I get home I have to take off my bra as it is so uncomfortable and put on an old loose bra.
If I do buy a 36 the back rides up during the day but is fine in the evening. I can't win.
Lolly, I do sympathise. I was wearing all sorts of bra sizes 38b which I was told once I was at Debenhams, not comfortable atall and I even tried a 40b - my bust looked like a platform.
Finally I went back to Debenhams and was measured by a young girl who very tightly measured me under the bust and pronounced me a 32E! Like you I found it felt very constricting, but she told me any bigger and it would ride up. She advised putting the bra around a chair back to help it "give" a little. I bought two more the same size from Marks and they felt equally uncomfortable. The cup size I knew was right as my boobs were separated and looked smaller.
Months on and the bras still feel uncomfortable at the end of the day. They are wired. I bought one 34E from Marks and that was a little better. I am in the process of trying to lose weight so will get measured again when I reach target. Meanwhile I have to wear these bras as they were quite expensive (for me).
I do look better in clothes but I wonder if I just don't "do" bras???Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

I've bitten the bullet and actually bought one (won't say the size as I'm sure some won't agree with me!) but it doesn't feel too bad and fits a lot better than the current ones I'm wearing so any step in the right 'size' direction is a good thing!. I'm hoping it will give slightly when washed a few times and I won't wear it all the time. I've learnt from experience that if I buy something and it's not quite comfortable then I just won't wear it, so I'm a little hesitent in buying too many until I know it's loosened slightly.
My OH finds it strange that something like a bra isn't 'made to fit' sort of thing as surely not all women have the right figure to wear the same size! He could have a point!
I just find wearing a bra a pain anyways and wish I was a lot smaller to get away with it sometimes but unfortunately it's not a good look and doesn't feel good! None of the women in my family like wearing bras, so maybe it's a family trait!!Thank you to everyone who posts comps! :A

I am sure you can have bras made to measure, if you can afford it! I remember hearing an item on Woman's Hour last year sometime about made to measure swimwear! Yup, google "bras made to measure" and there's more than one company out there!
The first thing I do when trying bras on is make the straps as long as possible. Even if the assistant tightens them when fitting, I know I'll loosen them again when I get home! Can't BEAR bra straps cutting in!
I bought two new bras in the Debenhams Sale yesterday, got 20% off each, £5 Debenhams voucher for spending over £30, free bar of Lily O'Brien's chocolate for spending over £5, and a voucher for 20% off any new lingerie bought after a fitting because they were too busy to offer a proper fitting service yesterday - that's time limited. Also if I take these bras back because the size is wrong, they'll honour the 20% discount if I exchange them. Will have to see if I've got time for a fitting ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hello
I'm wearing 30B at the moment but find the band too loose even on the smallest hook. I've had myself measured by 3 different places and all 3 said I should be a 28C or 28D but unfortunately none of them stocked these sizes! I've been searching high and low and on the internet but can't find anything.
Any advice please?Dummie0
