I have a debt with then from First National on my DMP I owe £623 paying £23.32 a month. Just found a letter from July stating my balance was £600 ish so I actually have around £400 left to pay. I have just sent off a letter to them to find out the true balance0

We received a letter last year about money owed from a washing machine we had and it was for £298 and we called them up and got a discounted offer of £268 and had to pay monthly installments of £20.35 , we got another letter a few months later offering a lower full repayment but because it's in my Dad's name and he doesn't know about the debt (cos he'd kick off about it) we just left it cos they won't allow me or my mom to talk over the phone about it and I've been making the payments through a transfer from my bank account, but the account balance was £257.39 which is what it would be if the discount hadn't been on but we've had letters stating the discounted amount and the monthly repayments. Is there anything we can do about this? also we've got the money to clear off the remaining balance in full next month but if we do this vis bank transfer can they demand further payments from us like any interest accrued. How's best to deal with this company when they won't speak to us over the phone even though they did at first cos we sorted the re-payment out. The balance is now £216.69 but it should be less than that.Halifax-Limit-£500-Balance-£0

You need to write to them. Unless the offer was a full and final settlement for the reduced amount and you have it in writing, you may struggle. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

Would it better just to pay the £216 and that be done with? I don't want them sending letters asking for extra payments, cos we want it finished with.Halifax-Limit-£500-Balance-£0

Send them a simple letter thanking them for their prior offer and asking how much they would accept to settle the account .“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

In the last letter we had to call to get them to accept a lower offer so we just left it cos I knew it was a waste of time me calling them. Would I have to write pretending to be my dad and what about signing the letter?.Halifax-Limit-£500-Balance-£0

I guess your father would have to write. There is no obligation to sign, he could just type his name.
Um, was your father aware of this debt?“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

If i can just make the final and full payment through my bank and have done with it, I'd do that instead of making monthly payments until it's cleared.Halifax-Limit-£500-Balance-£0

I'd call them up and say that it is your dad's debt but you have been paying it and you'd like to know how much they will accept to settle.
Make sure you get any full and final settlement figure in writing so you know it's all above board and they won't be chasing you for more
If you have all the details and are offering to pay they will be less bothered that it's not your account - its money for them after all!Indecision is the key to flexibility0
