Neutral and positive can sound the same to some, but eBay sees neutral the same as a negative. And any seller performance counts all neutrals as negatives, so going against the seller. And if the seller hasn't done anything wrong, it's not really on.
Strikes me that it is eBay which is getting this wrong:confused:. It's up to eBay to take it how the feedback placer meant it, not for the feedback placer to work out how eBay understand it.

So you'd leave a clearly inexperienced buyer a negative simply beacuse they gave you a neutral. Isn't that quite petty?
Sorry, i don't want to cause an argument, but I really wouldn't be bothered whether someone left me a neutral or a positive

I totally agree with the OP and disagree with this poster. I would have done exactly the same by calling the person to discuss it. I would want to know why they left a neutral with a positive comment to see if it was a mistake or to see what I had done wrong, if anything. I’ve had exactly the same issue myself where 2 buyers left neutrals with positive comments. I’ve contacted both and discussed it. One agreed to a withdrawal the other didn’t bother to reply so I negged him. 2 days later he agreed to a withdrawal.

A buyer’s responsibility goes beyond simply paying for something. They should act responsibly throughout and leaving frivolous feedback isn’t acting responsibly.

When you work all hours and strive to provide a superb service, always bending over backwards to assist if contacted by a customer, and then some idiot leaves a careless feedback marking then of course it stings and they deserve my wrath (of course that will all end soon with the feedback changes).

The problem is your actions are just as bad, if not worse. You didn't like the neutral feedback you received from a buyer so you choose to neg them in retaliation.

Imo (and I'm no eBay expert, just an ordinary Joe Public buyer and sometimes seller)...a phone call to ask about a feedback rating is a step too far even if it was done in a nice way.

As a buyer, I would just about have accepted an email querying my feedback but woe betide anyone who phones me to ask about it.

I realise a seller may feel this is part of the 'process of being a responsible seller' but I'm not sure many buyers would feel the same? Perhaps looking at it from the other side of the coin might be worth considering.

It's obviously one of those situations where there's no right or wrong, but the thought of giving a neg because you got a neutral is pretty shoddy.

Btw, when I read someone's feedback and if the feedback wording is positive but the 'colour' doesn't match, I sometimes wonder if the feedback leaver has simply made a mistake.

I don't give frivolous or shoddy negs, I leave feedback based on my opinion of how the transaction was completed. So far, my opinion of this transaction is not positive, so why should I not be truthful if or when I leave feedback?

    Petty? Yes.

But if he doesn't realise what he's doing is punishing sellers, or doesn't care, he NEEDS to change.

I wouldn't of phoned them, but I agree with the sentiment.

well i see no reason not to give them a neutral in return. all you can say is you hadn't heard anything from them before a neutral was left, and advise that next time they contact a buyer with any problems first. you're being truthful! a neg is too far, but it's just really annoying that a few idiots like this can really drag your percentage down. i only sell things now and again and this would really impact on mine!

But the negative in return would be directly related to something the buyer did or didnt do whereas their neutral left for me as a seller was not so the negative feedback is specifically relevant
