Who leaves feedback first?

what happens if you were not satisfied with the item you purchased and the seller was actually uncooperative. would you leave them a negative feedback knowing very well that they'll retaliate by leaving you one as well despite your prompt payment ???

If I had tried to contact the seller via e-mail and hadn't got anywhere I would get their contact details from ebay (you can do this HERE ) and call them. If after that they were still being uncooperative I would begin a dispute process with ebay. I would probably go to my credit card company to get a refund (if I'd paid that way) or begin a chargeback through paypal.
After all that, depending on how uncooperative the seller had been, I might leave a negative if I feel it is deserved.
Ebay~ A wretched hive of scum and villainy. :p

I both buy and sell, and I really do think that sellers should leave it first, when they have received the money.

As a buyer I have left feedback for lots of sellers and not got one in return and that makes me mad!

And while it may be voluntary, it is the whole ethos behind Ebay - so you should always leave feedback on every transaction, otherwise it rather makes a mockery of the idea.

Ebay should clarify it better, I think. But I did like Wig's idea.

I sell a lot and buy a few bits and bobs - and my way of selling is to leave f/b when they've paid up. If this is paypal then instantly, if it is a cheque - then when the cheque clears. This is because they've put their trust in you and done their bit first.

You have to gamble that everything is ok when they get the item, but when i sell i (hopefully) dont get anythign wrong, and ive never had a complaint since, so no need for a -ve.

I think you two have the right idea. You have to be confident as a seller that you are providing a good standard of service, if you get neg f/b you should use it to improve yourself.

Yes there will be the odd occasion you might get someone who negs you instead of trying to resolve the problem....but you can always follow up the red mark with a comment to that effect.

I have read sellers redmark follow ups, and they do sometimes make sense so I (as a buyer) ignore the redmark. Sometimes I'll look to see what f/b that seller gave their buyer, if it was a tit for tat "red" that will make me think twice about using that seller.

The wrong way to go is to do what many here think is perfectly acceptable, not to f/b until your buyer has f/b and then to base your f/b on what the buyer left for you!
  • As a e-bay powerseller i used to leave feed back first but caused no end of problems , if some buyers do not get everything there own way they use this as a revenge tool , but no no more i list the following statment on all my listings and since i adopted this rule i have no trouble at all " check the following out"

"Feedback is automatically left at the conclusion of our transaction.
This is known when the buyer has posted feedback for me. I will
gladly leave feedback for all those who post feedback for me.
Please do not email me and request that feedback be posted the
moment payment is received. How quickly payment is made is not the
only criteria for feedback, just as I am not merely evaluated on
how quickly I ship. We will be happy to work with you to resolve any
issues. We really want our customers to be happy and we strongly
encourage them to email us with any concerns prior to leaving
feedback in order to be fair to us and give us a chance to address
any concerns. Since feedback signals the end of the transaction.
We always leave positive feedback for all completed successful
    transaction"

Not every one will agree with me but if they do not like it there are other sellers, oh yes 1 more thing "i have never left bad feedback "

That really sounds the sensible thing to do. You are showing your sellers firstly that you are more than willing to help resolve any dissatisfaction and secondly that you give weight to what the buyer may leave you as a feedback. My argument is with buyers who don't care about the quality or description of their products and con people in the knowledge that if the buyer leaves a negative then they'll do the same. What would be even more generous of you (like one member on the forum is doing) is to ask the buyer to notify you by email of receipt and their satisfaction (or otherwise) before you leave them a feedback and not use their actual feedback as a confirmation of receipt.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
  • I agree with the other persons suggestion , though once i spoke and e-mailed a buyer who was happy, but after i left my possitve feedback first, 2 weeks later he left me neg feedback because a button had came off a shirt i sold him, ( no contact by the way) , i know this is a one off but i can and ruin your hard earned feedback!!

Possibly why not a pre feedback- feedback if you know what i mean , both leave feedback after transaction but it is only seen by them for lets say a week ( within this time hopefully i could be sorted) before it goes on their proper feedback, just a thought.

Allways buy from a pay pal seller with the following under his seller information on the item paid

    "PayPal Buyer Protection
Free Coverage now up to £500. See eligibility. "

This is a pretty good way to judge was sort of seller he is, and to be truthful his feedback will always tell what sort of seller he check on his feedback page for such things as how many feedback have been mutually withdrawn, if there a lots normaly means seller only reacts to problems after feedback is left.

Hope this has been of help

The only neg I had was from a seller after I had left a neg for her. She sold me a knackered, dirty, fag burned babys bouncer as New!!

I buy and sell on an irregular basis, but when I sell, I leave feedback when payment is received and cleared and when I buy I leave it once the item has arrived and been checked. If I have any problems (only the once so far) I email then telephone seller and lodge dispute with paypal if necessary.

I agree with the idea of a blind feedback method. There will always be flaws with any system, but this seems to be the fairest I have seen or can think of so far.

As someone else has pointed out, the buyer is initiating the "good faith" by sending money in the expectation of goods. Before anyone starts shouting, I know this is not always the case, but a line has to be drawn somewhere.

Top man...or cat  I know that not all sellers or buyer are the same but as you nicely put it "the line has to be drawn somewhere" and people should be able to distinguish between wrong or right regardless of the other party's intentions or how they would behave. ;)

even ebay's feedback reminder email standard template says 'thanks for buying xxxx, please leave feedback, once you do, i'll leave for you'

as a seller, you're a fool to leave feedback first UNLESS you have a totally irreversable payment sat in your hands.

for expensive items, its all too easy for a seller to loose everything (i.e. paypal reversals)

ebay's feedback system is flawed for this very reason, retaliatory feedbacks,

i'd rather have a neg against me than give in to an a#hole buyer (check my latest feedback, i'm bleugh there too)

I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)
