As this is so vehement let me reply directly.
Argos should get the TV so it isn't profiting from its error by keeping the interest from 10,000 people. To give it to a childrens charity seems a perfect gesture.
As for giving to charity. Take a look at the about us of this site and the MoneySaving Charity fund. Last year I managed to donate around £40,000 this year I hope more and am setting up my own MoneySaving kids charity.
I think Argos is making an error of judgement. The users of this site are fiercely loyal to argos, there is a specific argos forum, most of the 49p TV people came through the site. A £350 TV isn't a big gesture, the cost price to Argos is about £200 at a guess - yet after days of thinking it said no. What a crying shame!

If people didn't want Argos to potentially profiteer from their error they shouldn't have bought something that was obviously mispriced and they weren't going to get.
I don't think Argos are making an error of judgement and I don't see why they should give a tv to some hospital just because you say so.0 -

First of all - i have no problem with Argos not honouring the TV deal. Yet it made a mistake, a substantial one. It has got money sitting in the bank which it shouldn't have and is earning interest on that. The donation of one TV as a friendly good will gesture is a small amount to ask and I am surprised it is so short sited.
I think the title of this thread is very unfair ... it is as much the fault of the opportunists as it is of Argos ... how many were honest enough to infrom Argos of their very very obvious mistake.
It would have been nice if they had donated one TV to a charity of their choice, but it would have been even nicer if all the opportunists told Argos to hang onto the money and make a single donation to one of the Charities they support (at least the administration would have been much lower).
I thought at the time of Martins Blog that it was backing someone into a corner that they should not be backed into ... it is very difficult to say no when someone rattles the charity tin infront of you. But as per original response they do donate significant amounts to charity already.
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -

To accuse a company of letting sick children down is so unjust!!
Nobody has let sick children down, including argos!!
And i for one believe that the title should be changed!!!
Or is it now ok to use sick children to make a point!!

"Christine Puckett-Gouldin, from Burnley, Lancashire, bought four of the televisions from Homebase for £1.96.
The money was taken from her bank account on Monday but she has now received an e-mail saying that it will be refunded.
Mrs Pucket-Gouldin, 54, said yesterday: “I feel that’s the game the big boys play. A small retailer would feel honour-bound to honour the deal. "0 -

Whats all this about 10,000 orders at 5 pounds each?
Has anyone from argos/homebase confirmed that there were 10,000 orders and all were charged 5 pounds?
If not why assume 10,000 orders?
I looked at the threads and I decided not to order one, because of all the hassle involved.
Re the TV......Of course Argos should have agreed, however, does this mean everytime someone says to them "Ere, I fink you should donate a TV to this hospital" they should do it?
Doesn't bother me either way, I don't shop at Argos and I don't shop at homebase so what ever!0
