Anyway to cut the old budget a bit? It's temporary so it's okay. Plus, once you've been in a job for a bit, you might be able to lower the APRs on some of the debts.

    Excellent point Gemmzie.

At this point in the life of your family-YOU are the most precious resource. Not just cos you're you but on a more pragmatic level your present earnings-and future earnings potential are what is going to get you out of debt.
So you need to build your priorities around that. Resources need to be looked after or they stop producing !
Tell the kids it is payback time for the skiing and give them specific housework jobs
Look at the hourly rate for the karate......add in travel time...estimate tiredness time-and calculate how much more you could earn in those hours mb-ing or free bingo-ing whilst languishing on the sofa !
Also you ARE going to be more tired whilst getting into the swing of the new job-with any new job there's a learning curve and also tiredness whilst adjusting to a new routine. So accept it at least for the first month and build in breathing space (I'd say rest time but I know you better than that ;) )
You can always re-evaluate after a couple of monthsand add stuff back in again if you feel your energy levels can take it once you're settled in the job.
And stop been so blinking hard on yourself-look at the totals in your sig and see how far you've come already-and with this new job the potential to do even better ......and worry about adjusting focus later-concentrate on you the valuable resource for now !
(OK I've finished you can stop Lah-lah-ing now !!)

The streamlining sounds perfectly sensible - don't feel guilty for a moment about giving up the course, you're making the best decision for your self and your family.

Does your daughter iron? My oldest DD suddenly developed a desire for ironed clothes recently and now irons her own stuff - and any others I push her way when I see her ironing. She does it just as well as I do.

I am sure your life is going to get easier and you will be able to afford that cleaner before long. Another six months and you'll be joining the rest of us in the wonderful world of 0% balance transfers! And of course there's that carboot sale you're doing with Pania sometime soon.

  • I totally agree with you Hypno.

You need to find a balance otherwise you will be too exhausted to carry on and will probably end up ill, not good for you and everyone else.

There is nothing stopping you from going back to college in a few years time once things have settled down a bit and you know what spare time you do have.

I'm with everyone else! You're being sensible in prioritising and streamlining - for instance, just as an example, if you have a way of earning £40 an hour, even if you need to take a rest afterwards, its crazy to not take it up in favour of earning £5 an hour for two hours, or even four.

You have to conserve your energy so that you can do that better paying job. There's a lot of good posts in the last 18 hours or so - Duchy's and Mizmir's spring to mind, Seaxwyn's too, ooh, and Gemmzie kicking it all off. These are people with no axe to grind, you *know* that - its a shame about college, I know it looks like "quitting" to you, but even for you, there's only so many hours in the day. Its that dreadful management speak, "work smarter" - with so many calls on your time, and opportunities, you have to work smart.

I'll be keeping an image of Hypno with decent coffee and her feet up firmly at the forefront of my brain today.... cos no, its not too much to ask.

    Good morning Hypno,

Do make time to relax, the first few weeks of a new job are normally especially stressful and tiring.

Just wondered with you swapping to the bus pass in the week, are you still running 2 cars?

    Cars are money pits.

I was wondering if I'd need a car again at the new place we'll be renting, but spotted online that the local car hire company will deliver the car locally to the house, so for the odd days I need one it will be no problem. Also odd taxis to the railway station etc.. One less car is a big saving if it's practical. It does tend to mean being a bit more organised, as you can't do impulsive nips out if a car isn't there all the time.

Just thought it might be worth raising.

Hi Seaxwyn, you were on my thread while I was on yours!! Spooky!!

Basically I have realised that I am not superwoman, however much I would like to think that I am......(housework excluded).....

So, I cannot keep up with all the things I am trying to do without risking exhaustion, breakdown, divorce or all three.........

    So.......

I am going to give up college - I had 3 assignments to be in yesterday and only one has been started - I have been granted an extension, but even if I get that lot done, there is another to be done before the middle of June.

I know that I have put in an awful lot of work so far, and that I am "throwing it away" but it is not relevant to my new job, and I need to make the new job the priority as it has the best potential for getting me debt free and allowing us in due course to do some of the things that we would love to be able to do like have a "real" holiday and change the car etc.......

Similarly, at the moment I do admin for karate in order to get one child free lessons....this saves me £31 a month, but to get that £31 I have to go straight from work to karate, get home at 9pm and am starving, and tired. It is time to start working out whether it really is worth that saving of £31 or whether I can make that up elsewhere. Again, the priority has to be the main job - if I am too tired to work efficiently in what is a very pressured job, I will not get the recognition that I need, crave and deserve.

I need the energy to get on top of the things I need to do -yes that includes the bloody housework........and as things stand, I don't have the time or energy to eat yet alone anything else.

All I want is for the books to balance, and to have a space I can come home to at a reasonable time, and to either work in a stress free tidy space, or to put my feet up with a glass of wine or a decent cup of coffee........is it really too much to ask for

    Any ideas?

Hypno you need to look after yourself, get the kids to help with the housework, do extras when you can but LOOK AFTER YOURSELF!!! If you get ill they whole thing will fall apart

OH is very much against getting rid of one car on the basis we own outright with no finance both cars, and if we decide later that we can't manage, we would have to borrow the money to buy another one - even if it is second hand.........

So, my idea is....both cars have tax due at the end of this month - I am inclined to SORN the smaller one, and see how long we can manage without. Thin end of the wedge type thing.......
