I use "ordinary" apples, but don't add any sugar
  • yes an apple is an apple i use any type in mine and just adjust sugar to match the sweetness of the apple.

soz im thick do you still boil the apples?
  • Here you go; (found it on the bbc website)

300g/10½oz plain flour, sieved pinch of salt
    175g/6oz unrefined brown sugar
200g/7oz unsalted butter, cubed at room temperature
    Knob of butter for greasing

    Filling:
450g/1lb apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1cm/½in piece
    50g/2oz unrefined brown sugar
    1 tbsp plain flour
    1 pinch of ground cinnamon
    Method
    1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.
    2. Place the flour and sugar in a large bowl and mix well. Taking a few cubes of butter at a time rub into the flour mixture. Keep rubbing until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
    2. Place the fruit in a large bowl and sprinkle over the sugar, flour and cinnamon. Stir well being careful not to break up the fruit.
    3. Butter a 24cm/9in ovenproof dish. Spoon the fruit mixture into the bottom, then sprinkle the crumble mixture on top.
    4. Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes until the crumble is browned and the fruit mixture bubbling.
    5. Serve with thick cream or custard.

  • don't boil them but i gently simmer mine for a few mins in a little water to soften the outside then transfer to a dish for crumble topping to go on. Dont over cook or you will end up with apple sauce.

I just peel and chop any leftover apples (usually golden delicious) then cook them in a pan with a little (I mean little) water until soft.

I then put them into an over proof dish and make a crumble with some butter, plain flour, brown sugar, oats, cornflakes all mixed in to a breadcrumb consistency. Then top the apple and chuck it in the oven at about 180c for about half an hour.

Nothing fancy but always get compliments about it.
So little money - so much time
  • how do i prepare them for a crumble /pie ect. how much sugar do i add?

  • I'm no expert but made it yesterday. Did my own thing. Family said it was lovely so hopefully it was I'm on a diet so didn't have any.

Chopped up the apples added to saucepan with a large dessert spoon of butter or marg. I just sprinkled on sugar probably about a tablespoon full, taste it. You don't want the apple too sweet because the crumble is sweet. I let the apple soften leaving lumps of apple for a bit of body. I bought a pack of pre prepared crumble from tesco to added to the top of the softened apple.
