Im 37 (38 in a fortnight - sob!) and first got into debt in my first term at Uni. Barclays offered me a £200 overdraft and it all went downhill from there - I think they gave me a CC the next term.....I then met my (now) ex still whilst at Uni. and we spent the next 14 years in debt - he is of the thought that he needs to have 'nice' things in the house and fridge and when I was a few months short of 30, we were earning well over £40k between us but were probably £10k in debt - at least.

Anyway, we split nearly 5 years ago and I moved. Old habits died hard and I ended up with 25k debt.

This site saved my bacon (and eggs and sausages!) and I worked bloody hard to pay it off, and change my attitudes.

I'm now debt free and whilst I'm not perfect I'm never, ever going into debt again.

Hi, I'm 35 & have been in debt since I was 26. I bought a house & was budgetting well, but split up with ex & started living the single life as though I was still living with my parents, drunken nights & days & takeaways:rotfl: ! Met my current partner soon after who had a few debts too but nothing too serious. We bought the house that we are in now & should have used £10k of the profit I made on old house to pay debts off,but used it to go on shopping sprees & holidays:o ! To be fair we have ploughed £1,000's into doing our house up but if I/we had been sensible from the beginning we'd probably have + £30k in the bank & not -£30k:D ! We are chipping away at the debts & hopefully will be DF way before my 40th birthday:j !!

I am 27 (almost 28) and have been in a small amount of debt since 18 but then sadly like a couple of others I discovered gamnbling and so accumulated a huge amount of debt online gambling and betting shops, what a waste of money and time

I now thankfully wouldn't put so much as £1 on a bet now, totally gamble free but a long way to go with shifting the debt but it'll all be worth it when I can hold my head up high again
Money doesn't make you happy so I'm skint but cheerful
  • I'm 25, first debt was student overdraft at 18.

Took until 24 to realise that my lifestyle wasn't sustainable, and am now trying to get a happy medium of lifestyle and paying off debts (above minimum as we've always done that). I do actually get as much pleasure from being frugal as I used to from reckless spending!

    I'm 42.

I've been in debt almost continuously since I was given a Barclaycard as part of the "learning about money" section of the Youth Training Scheme when I was 17

maybe schools should be training youngsters "no you can have it when you have saved up the money."

no wonder people get into this state, i remember getting a credit card with a very high limit at about 24 and thinking ohhhhh what am i going to spend this on lol.....dosnt feel so funny now

I understand the concepts of cooking and cleaning
........ I Just dont understand how they apply to me!
