I bought mine from a farmshop & the lady said they store them for ages, maybe even the previous year under refrigeration, because they arent expecting people to eat them, so now i'm not sure if i fancy my pumpkin soup. I know this isnt necessarily good news but i felt i ought to share.
Mind you they are easy to grow & at least you know how long they have been knocking about then.
I should think they have to fit for human consumption or they wouldn't be able to sell them. Mine was fine, we ate the lot!0 -
I've posted a seperate thread with the toffee apple recipe!
I've decided to do popcorn bags this year, in green/red colours plus some toffee popcorn! Just need to get some bags!

Just to back this up:
Last year my sister & kids came to stay for halloween, so we duly hollowed out the supermarket pumpkins, made lanterns & then made soup with the flesh, which we had for lunch. Every single one of us had the runs later that day & the only thing we can put it down to was the pumpkin.0 -

Ok, we've got 3 pumpkins that we've grown in the garden. The kids are excited as we're going to carve them out for halloween.
BUT.... can anyone tell me what bits of the pumpkin you can eat and what you can't? Also any recipes would be good? Are there different varieties of pumpkin? ie eating and non eating sort?
Any advice would be appreciated as I aint got a clue!!!!:eek:0 -
I didn't know that there were non-eating pumpkins!! Here is my recipe for pumpkin pie:
pie shell made with 8oz flour, 5oz hard margarine, 1oz sugar, 1 egg yolk
Jut rub the fat into the flour, add the sugar and a pinch of salt and use the egg yolk and enough water to bind to a dough. Put in fridge for 20 mins and then roll out to line an 8" pie dish.
To make the filling you need:
12oz pureed cooked pumpkin (just peel, discard seeds and chop and boil for about 10 mins, or chop up with peel on, discard seeds and bake in oven at 180 for 25 mins and then take peel off)
4 oz brown sugar
half a tsp salt
1tsp cinnamon
1tsp powdered ginger
half a tsp nutmeg
3 eggs
8fl oz milk
8 fl oz whipping cream
4 tbs sherry
pre-heat the oven to gas 4 or 180. Beat the eggs, and add the milk, cream and sherry. Mix this with the pumpkin, sugar salt and spices and pour into pie dish. Bake 45 minutes and serve just warm with ice cream.Jane
