Pumpkins (merged threads)

Options
Buy them! They keep for a year as long as they have no bruises or scratches, some of the shops or markets will have them cheap.
Uses for them:
[/list]soup
curry
puree for baby food
add some pureed to plain bread mix to make pumpkin bread
pumpkin pie
you can steam them with custard inside if they are small, looks pretty when you cut it in slices!
chopped and roasted to make a pasta sauce with garlic and onions and some herbs from the garden
  • Im not sure of their nutritional value but you get a hell of a lot of food out of one pumpkin
AND you can eat the seeds ;D

I saved all the scrapings & seeds when we carved ours last week. OK, it was about a 7lb pumpkin but so far I have made 4 pumpkin pies & 2 litres of pumpkin soup & still not used half of it!
Someone gave me a tip years ago for the seeds : put in a bowl with a sprinkling of salt & a dash of lemon or lime juice & microwave until crispy, cool & crack the shells off for "toasted" pumpkin seeds, delicious in bread! (Alternitively, just sling them on the bird table whole if you can't be bothered with peeling them for yourself) ;)

Once you have scrapped out the seeds/flesh and used as above, do remember, that the shell makes a very attractive "vase" for placing seasonal foliage into and makes a STUNNING display!!

  • Just to be a bit different, I made some wine out of one last last year.

For those into home wine-making, it's quite a curious little brew and certainly worth a go.

You made wine from a pumpkin, biscuit ???

I feel like a complete waster......I scraped it out, threw away the seeds, carved strange eyes, ears, nose, and teeth.

I know it wasn't moneysaving, and I should have collected seeds etc ......but my four year old has had so much pleasure from a pumpkin that only cost me £1.50.
