The good bit of the pumpkin seed is inside so you need to dry them (over night in a warm but switched off oven is ideal) then split them open & remove the yummy bit & discard the husks. It is one of those jobs which you need to sit in front of the TV for!
Good luck;)Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

Maybe we could add to this thread with some pumpkin recipes. Last year we dried the seeds and the hamsters loved them. Also made pumpkin muffins which the girls liked too. Was going to try soup this year but any other ideas would be welcome.0

My 4yo wanted me to carve a pumpkin for her - so we had a go today though I must say his face is a bit scewy!:rotfl:
I made soup with mine using a recipe that was in Good Housekeeping this month. Tastes quite yummy so have stashed it in the fridge for me and oh to have for dinner on Tuesday after our first ever parents evening
I usually make bread with butternut squash so I guess pumpkin would be just as good."all endings are also beginnings. We just don't know it at the time..."0 -
When I did a pumpkin last year I found that it went mouldy within a couple of days.
As Halloween is 2 weeks away and some of you have already done your pumpkins how to you get them to last 'til then, or do you make new ones.0 -
Would love the recipe for that soup please, and thanks for the advice about them going mouldy.
I am having a halloween party and wouldn't want to make them too early.
Yet again, the thank you buttons has disppeared.:hello:0 -

Pumpkin soup.
I just fry an onion, garlic and rasher of bacon in olive oil, add pumpkin, water a potato and seasoning, simmer for about 20 mins then whizz with handblender, voila!0 -
Pumpkin seeds are yummy, you could boil and dry them plain for adding to cereal and bread mixes or you could toast them, here's a recipe for toasted pumpkin seeds that was given to me by a friend.
Pumpkin Seeds (cleaned)
1 Tablespoon Fine Sea Salt
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
1 Teaspoon Dried Rosemary
Bring a pan of water to the boil and add the salt and seeds and simmer for 10 minutes. Drain the seeds and add to a bowl, mix in the oil and rosemary or other flavouring (see below).
Spread out the seed mixture thinly on a oven tray, bake the seeds in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes until they reach a light, golden brown color. Shake the seeds around every 10 minutes during cooking.
You can use chilli powder, garam masala or garlic powder/salt instead of the rosemary and salt. You can also try 1 teaspoon of cinnamon instead of the rosemary and sugar, for a sweeter yummy treat.NSD Challenge 2010:Jul 12/12; Jun 21/14 :T; May : 6/6

Last year we made 2 pumpkins (no children) we had a party and went trick or treating, made £5 and went back to one of the houses that a young girl had answered and gave her the £5 - she was so chuffed!
Anyway, I admit I through away the flesh! But like the idea of pumpkin muffins, does anyone have a recipe? I don't like giving money or buying sweets to give out, so I make stuff! The first year I made red and green toffee apples, last year I made fairy buns with green butter cream and sugarpaper motiffs and was thinking about making spooky cookies this year!

When my sister went to ASDA to buy pumpkin last year they asked if it was for lanterns or eating because the lanterns ones arent grown for eating & the flesh isnt very nice. I bought mine from a farmshop & the lady said they store them for ages, maybe even the previous year under refrigeration, because they arent expecting people to eat them, so now i'm not sure if i fancy my pumpkin soup. I know this isnt necessarily good news but i felt i ought to share.
Mind you they are easy to grow & at least you know how long they have been knocking about then.....another happy bug.........sorry,blogger embracing the simple life0
