all these months i have been using my phone (nokia 6820) as a modem to connect to the internet on my laptop by dial up which is 0845 number. but it costs a a lot....(9p/minute)
any cheaper way to do this ? ... GRPS is just 4 times more expensive...i use the IrDA port of my laptop and my phone to connect to the internet and dial 0845 through my contract phone....
how about if i use the 1899.co.uk to dial-up..will it allow ?
pls advise. thank you

Many people have used 1899 prefix to dial the ISPs including myself. However, I did this on using my PC's dial up modem and BT line. I would thing that it would still be possible on the mobiles provided you use the mobile access numbers first (i.e. the 0808.... or 0207....) before dialling your ISP number. Haven't tried it myself though.
P.S. you'll of course be charged for dialling the access number (unless you are on an orange contract with free calls to 0808... numbers) in addition to the price of the call using 1899 or 18866.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -
No, you can't do it that way unfortunately. 1899 state at their website here that you cannot get discounts on Internet numbers, but I suspect that is only the case from a landline.
Not sure how this would work via GPRS on your mobile - probably best to check with 1899 first....0 -
cheers mate0

How would you do that from an NTL phone though ? You have to dial a separate number first - it's not automatic as it is with BT...0

Aiadi wrote:You can indeed use 1899 to access your ISP and get the exact 1899 rate despite them stating otherwise. I use dial up connection in the US, Germany and UK all for the rates stated on there site despite them stating otherwise. However you need to always keep an eye on their rates as they do change from time to time.0

Take a look at their website for detailsEspecially for all NTL, Telewest, other non-BT landline and mobile customers! Due to great demand you can now also benefit from cheap 1899-rates via our dedicated freephone number 0808 1 708 708 *! Mobile users can also use our local rate access number 020 7001 9696 *.
You'd have to put a few pauses in the dial-up number, putting the number above first followed by comma's ,,,,,, you'll have to see if it expects a hash (#) in the sequence.0 -
There was a previous thread on MSE suggesting using 1899 to dial Germany and to log in to German ISPs. At that time calls to Germany were free so there was no cost apart from the connection charge. Now I notice that 1899 are charging 0.5p/minute for Germany but that still might be cheaper paying 0845 UK numbers during the day.
Here's the details from that thread:
Oliverkinne gave some earlier in this thread. Here there are again:
Mirado: +49 681 9506 -or- +49 681 950990 -or- +49 6841 989590 -or- +49 6872 969590 - Username and password both "internet" (lower case!!)
O.tel.o: +49 30 28702000 -or- +49 521 3291000 -or- +49 5922 769000 -or- +49 211 26002600 - Username "otelo" and password "online" (lower case!!)
Callisto: +49 30 3958000 -or- +49 521 78703 -or- +49 421 52370 -or- +49 228 9739090
M-Net: +49 811 5417017 -or - +49 851 7777755 -or- +49 89 55069799
-or- +49 8131 618777
Freenet: +49 221 26090707 -or- +49 69 698600707 -or- +49 40 35070707 -or- +49 30 221600707
I personally tried yesterday the fist number mentionned here for Freenet (website freenet.de). I don't understand anything since it is in german, but it does not matter as far as it works! I just dialled my 1899 prefixe, followed by the 0049 blabla number, chose my own username and password, and in seconds I was logged in. I stayed connected 1h40 yesterday without problems, so I am pretty happy about it for 3p/connection! I did check my call1899 account this morning, they effectively charged me only 3p. So as long as call1899 prices to Germany will stay, I'll stick with that trick. Thanks again Oliverkinne0
