Sorry for being stupid, but in this day of digital technology, why are there major problems with Freeview reception?
Because some transmitters are still on reduced power so that they don't interfere with co-located analogue transmitters.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

The main reason is that it was a government money making service/idea they managed to sueeze into frequency gaps between the analogue services.
The gaps had been left to stop analogue services in different parts of country interfering with each other.

When the analoge services close down the power will increase as will the number of channels, there is space for hundreds, but unfortunately the free element will reduce.

This ( Digital Terrestial TV) started out as a govenment money spinning idea, a spin off from other privatisations,
by selling off frequencies to the highest bidder.

Luckily for us it originally failed, hence the new name Freeview. Watch this space, Murdoch has ideas.

First named On- Digital, then ITV digital both went bust, but rescued for HM Gov by BBC.

Originally Sky had PPV channels on it and from July they are going to do the same, by removing the free ones currently there.

Does anyone know of any cheap Freeview boxes that would work with a TV without SCART ?? - ie, have a RF modulator built in (not passthrough).

    Thanks in advance,

I'm looking for a freeview box that also records - anyone know which one's the best deal? (Reception's not a problem)

We can now get freeview in our area, so I would also appreciate any recommendations of set top boxes that record.

I was wondering if anyone who has bought a digi-box , then noticed they cannot programme the sky programmes to swop over ..ie

If I went to bed , on ordinary I would programme sky Living for CSI Miami @ 11pm then at 12am it would automattically change over to Sci-fi , then again @ 1pm to Hallmark..

Ive been told you can not do this when you swop to a digi -box ...any1 noticed this ??

By the way...Argos are currently doing a 15" TV with Freeview built in for under £150.Curry's do one for under £180...
  • Just wondering if anyone has advice re: rubbish freeview reception even though the freeview website says my area is covered? Have moved to Cheltenham (although also had problems in Gloucester) and can get ABSOLUTELY NO RECEPTION WHATSOEVER. Argh. The terrestrial TV reception (via, I think, a roof top aerial) is perfect. In Gloucester we only had a prob with freeview when the normal TV channels weren't picking up either (I.e. I think we had a dodgy aerial) - there doesn't seem to be the same link this time though. I was wondering whether it's because we're using a cheapish box? I also have one of those aerials with a dish and two long antennae but surely that won't be better than a rooftop one? Has anyone else had similar problems in Cheltenham?

    Cheers!

I bought a Freeview Box from Lidli and when I brought it home it showed that there was only a 65% signal. Luckily Lidli have a great returns policy brought it back and no problem got my money back.

Digital does seem a bit dodgy at the moment. I'm writing from Northern Ireland and I don't think our region, in general, has great cover. One wonders if the Government are going to meet their target.
