Trying really hard to OS but the prices keep going up

I'm another one that does my bulkbuy at tesco. I buy alot of value brands and whatever is on offer. I pivk up some things locally but overall I find that having it delivered from ONE place is better than spending x hrs dragging DS round loads of shops with no car!
Prices have gone up though. Bread is one I've noticed, getting decent wholemeal bread costs a fortune now. I buy tesco value wholemeal for toast but prefer something a bit nicer for sarnies. I like to make bread but DH refuses to eat my HM bread as he says its too heavy - I'm getting a breadmachine for Xmas but until then I just keep trying to find bargains.
We eat loads of fruit which is a big expense but hard to cut down on. I'm not a brilliant cook and DH has very little time so its hard sometimes to work out cheap meals. I'd be quite happy with a sandwich or baked beans on toast but DH prefers what he calls proper meals - problem is that usuually means expensive!DEBT: £500 credit card £800 Bank overdraft

The only problem with storing food now is what if prices drop, but also be careful it doesn't go off. Flour for example and weevils.
Last year we had the problem of the floods and ruining the harvesy also the set aside laws. I heard that this year a lot farmers were going to reduce their set aside. I had hoped that prices might drop as harvests started to come in. One major thing that we can hope for is that our rain goes to Australia!! Also that govts wake up and realise that bio fuels take about as much energy to make as they give!0 -

This is a difficult one ...................i don't think prices on staples will come down much.If you are aware of what is going on in the global economy then demand is outstripping supply in things like rice so the highest bidder will win.
On the other hand the supermarkets are in a way insulating us from some price rises and doing a lot more deals on luxury goods but don't forget the supers are there to make a profit out of us ...........once you understand and accept this you are better equipped to play the game
If prices were to drop i dont think i would mind even if i had tons stockpiled as i would have had peace of mind in uncertain times plus i mostly use value products and prices on those couldn't get much lower

do you use all wholemeal flour in your bread?? if so substituting about a third for white makes a much lighter loaf

I'm sitting here thinking "Thank goodness I "fixed" my gas/electric price rises for the coming year at that horrific 13% a week or so ago". I'd be feeling sick - and frightened - right now if I hadnt. Was it 60%/70% they said earlier this morning on the radio that they thought gas might go up this year (because of that artificial linkage to the price of oil)  My mouth fell open at just how high the figure was anyways! Whew! I have the feeling that unless/until things improve then once my fuel price fix finishes at end of August next year that my gas could end up NEVER being used at all (and its what runs my central heating! ). So my central heating, sitting room fire and hotwater heating (apart from my electric shower) are gas-powered. I'm just sitting here thinking "Thank goodness the new cooker I had to buy recently is electric". I did think about swopping to a gas cooker instead - but was uncomfortably aware how vulnerable gas prices are - so decided to stick to my cooker being electric....thank goodness.....
Once September next year comes - then I guess I could end up boiling up kettles for all hotwater uses (except that electric shower) - so I'm using electric as the fuel concerned instead of gas. I can see my gas sitting room fire sitting there surplus to requirements - I wont take it out - as I will be crossing fingers the Government will break that darn price link between gas and oil and I can use it again in the future. The central heating next winter onwards - well I will leave it in place. I assume my radiators will be okay for running off "alternative" energy - once it has been established for sure exactly what your ordinary householder in the street needs to do to their home - AND how it is going to be paid for by those of us on low salaries.
A woodstove isnt possible for many people - even if one doesnt live in a smokeless zone. It cant be operated the way other heating can - ie on and off as and when required, there isnt enough wood around for everyone to have one, many of us have nowhere to store the wood and many of us couldnt physically chop it up anyway.
When I was listening to the news this morning, they said that the gas would increase by about 60% over the next FEW YEARS.
As for your hot water, you can always fill a basin or whatever, with the water from the shower. I'm pretty sure it would work out cheaper than boiling the kettle all the time, at least that what I've been doing when we've not had the fire on this summer.
I agree the woodburner isn't practical for everyone, and that's not just due to the fuel i.e sourcing, drying, storing and the physical filling of the fire, not to mention the daily cleaning. I am in desperate need of getting my woodburner serviced, but can't find anyone local to do it, and dreading how much it'll cost assuming they can still get the parts.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -
my washing machine has 3 programmes [ delicaltes, handwash.quick wash] which wash using cold water. I now use them as much as possible, as if ironing hot that will kill the bugs anyway."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0

ceridwen - been out all day and just read about the gas/elec. increase possibilities.............eeek  Haven't fixed mine yet !!! Changed tarriff earlier this year and been following guidelines on the Utilities board, some of which suggested my new tarriff might end up cheaper anyway, but would depend on how much the increase was
Surely, if prices go up to that extreme the government has to step in and do something don't they ? We have gas central heating -apart from that its all electric.........cooker, the lot. Don't like the thought of having to sacrifice the gas in order to keep lights etc.(or vice versa) going or cutting back too much on food. Memo to self...............must buy primus stove !
Where will it all end ? Puts me ina state of panic it really does though it shouldn't, not when I think of the third world countries where some families have absolutely nothing.
OH was beside himself over the shopping bill this week and really is was just normal basic stuff ........no real luxuries at all. On top of that two tomato plants look like they might have the dreaded 'blight' ! Just hope it doesn't spread to the potatos !
Dear me.............must try and think of something positive in all thisMary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

Was in Morrisons today to get some tins of Corned Beef to make some HM pies. The cheapest I could find was Princes at £1. 59  I don't live near Netto,Tesco, or Asda so will try Farm Foods tmorra. My word the prices for C beef have shot up, you could pick these up for 58p last year.”Pour yourself a drink, (tea for me now)
