I could'nt agree more and to be honest we don't eat hardly anything that is processed. The trouble is my daughter lives alone in another city and what with working/travelling time she has'nt a lot of time to shop and cook.I'm trying to educate her on my monthly visits but it is'nt easy.I shudder when I see what she eats now compared to what she ate at home.I'm justing hoping she'll realise that cooking can be a satisfying thing to do and not a chore as she does now.
  • Another good reason to avoid palm oil - its high in saturated fat.

Reading that article I think that there are going to be even more orphan orangutans as well. They chop down the forest to plant the Palm oil trees and the old man of the forest is killed and made homeless. Yet another victim of the problem

The really wild kids tv program reported on this issue a few years ago...they said then that they only had around 12 years left in the wild before all the habitat was destroyed. I think that deadline is getting shorter by the day...more like 5 years now I think.

I know what you mean - we don't have a local market and have to drive to the shops (nearest is 5 miles away) and kids school is 4 miles - we have an old diesel and use 70% diesel and 30% veggie oil - only prob is that since this became popular the cheap sources of used oil (chip shop) etc cottoned on and are charging the same as buying standard oil from the shop, since the car is a necessity not a luxury it is the food that we buy that gets squeezed even more to accomodate this.

We don't use veg oil in our car, but I only just found out a couple of weeks ago that:

You can use vegetable oil in your car and mix it with diesel (vegetable oil is generally used as a substitute for diesel) but you will have to make arrangements to pay the excise duty to HMRC.

Important Note: It is illegal to run your car on any fuel substitute without having first paid us the duty.

In the meantime, Shell & BP made £68 billion profit in the past year.

Sorry but I don't believe that to be correct you have a personal limit of 2500 litres of veggie oil/bio fuel before any duty is due. The law was changed back last year.

Also note that Shell and BP do not make all that from petrol and petrol stations but oil and gas in general.

Thanks for that calleyW it agrees with the extensive research we did before doing this - we have been keeping the receipts just in case but should be well below this limit - every little helps and buying the odd litre of veggie oil at about a pound a litre is still cheaper than buying at the local petrol station - went past today and diesel is 120.9:eek:

Thanks, I think I vaguely remember something about this, good that it applies to veg oil as well as biodiesel.

We tried biodiesel once, but our fuel economy went down by over 10%, which cancelled out the benefit of paying less for the biodiesel.

We've read quite a bit on using veg oil as well, but felt the risk to our engine wasn't worth the savings. We have a fairly new car, though, that could make a difference, may not be as much of a problem on older cars.

If I had new diesel I would not try. But if I had a grotty old diesel that is on it's last legs then I might give it a try.

I have petrol and I am going to have cut back on my running around because of the cost.

Does anyone know what is going on with tomato puree, is this the latest thing to suffer a shortage?

I had to visit three shops to get some.
Lidl's don't have any and apparently haven't had any for over a week now! Aldi's didn't have any but was so busy, I didn't ask what the situation was. Finally managed to get some in morrisons, so bought 2 lots in case this is going to be an ongoing problem.
