Its a very sad state of affairs when food is available but people cannot afford to eat it as was mentioned on the 10 o'clock new last night ....we are still very lucky in comparison to so many people.
What worries me now is that although I have very cheap market to buy my meat, fruit and veg ,it isnt within walking distance...am I going to be able to afford the petrol to get there . If it carries on going up like this so will my food bills...by almost double...(because to shop within walking distance=no cheap market only morrisons) I already hardly use the car...

I know what you mean - we don't have a local market and have to drive to the shops (nearest is 5 miles away) and kids school is 4 miles - we have an old diesel and use 70% diesel and 30% veggie oil - only prob is that since this became popular the cheap sources of used oil (chip shop) etc cottoned on and are charging the same as buying standard oil from the shop, since the car is a necessity not a luxury it is the food that we buy that gets squeezed even more to accomodate this.

Tumbler tomatoes are £1.65 for 10 seeds in Wilkinsons (my packet had 12 !) and they`re 3 packets for 2 so if you buy rocket and salad bowl lettuce which you can keep cutting it`s quite money saving. :rotfl:

Tomato seeds store well, so any not used this year should be fine for the next couple of years. All of my toms this year have been grown from previous years seed.

I usually stock up on seeds like this from Woolworths, they usually reduce all their seeds to 60p at the beginning of June. This includes the multi packs where you get several different types of seed in the pack. Lidl's also sell cheap seed - I think their smaller packs are only 29p not sure what they've got in the way of toms though!

If you do make up baskets, buy some cheap bathroom sponges soak them in water until they are saturated and put them in the bottom of the basket before adding the compost. It helps with retaining water when you water and helps keep the roots moist on hot days as baskets can really dry out quickly.

Reading that article I think that there are going to be even more orphan orangutans as well. They chop down the forest to plant the Palm oil trees and the old man of the forest is killed and made homeless. Yet another victim of the problem

my daughter has refused to eat anything with palm oil in it for a long time as she can't stand the thought of these poor animals dying out.Trouble is there is very little that is available without it,it seems to be in everything wether it's biscuits, stuffing mix or certain frozen food the list is endless.
