this came a as a big shock to me this week. I had a bulk of veg oil and ran out this week. I could'nt believe my eyes:eek: . These price increases are really beginning to make me feel the pinch. I really hope they don't continue. We have very few luxuries as it is, the last time we went on holiday we 2003 my OH works full-time on an average wage. It makes we wonder how others are coping.0 -

There is a lot on the BBC website about the global food crisis. They give six families from around the world as examples as to the difference the rises are making.
The UK family spend £80 -£100 a week, about 10% of there income. I wish our income was £50,000 a year!
Between March 2007 and March 2008 wheat prices have gone up by 130%. It's all a bit of a worry.0 -

10% are they having a laugh mine is currently about 30% from my reckoning it used to be about 20%. Thats to feed ME,OH and 4 children ages 15,13,6 and 2. no pets then my bills are 60% which leaves 10% to play with not a very lot.
But this should improve soon when i finish paying the debts. And i can convince OH we can live without sky sports.0 -
I shop in Aldi for particular favourites and for their 49p fruit/veg offers. At the moment you can buy 3 large courgettes for 49p instead of £1.50-£1.99.
I also shop in Asda and Tesco and noticed yesterday that some of Asda's special offers aren't that special. I remember packets of various items on at 3 for £2 and now it has crept upto 3 for £3!
Although they do still have the bread mixes on at 2 for £1.
Well at least the food is still on the shelves and we have money to buy it and we're certainly not starving like others are in certain countries.0 -

I tried growing Gardeners Delight in a basket and they didn't do half as well as the Tumbler. The tumbling ones are naturally branching so they produce more tomatoes all over the plant rather than on a few trusses.
If you're only growing one or two plants, it'll probably work out cheaper to buy the plants partly grown (about 55-85p) rather than pay a couple of quid for 8 seeds.
I use old jumpers for basket liners or knit my own and add a round of plastic in the bottom. Anything that will hold water works just as well as bought ones.

Tumbler tomatoes are £1.65 for 10 seeds in Wilkinsons (my packet had 12 !) and they`re 3 packets for 2 so if you buy rocket and salad bowl lettuce which you can keep cutting it`s quite money saving. :rotfl:0 -

I think the thing to do is to keep a price list of good deals by the kilo/liter/etc. It gets tricky when they start packing things as 475 grams or 780 grams and other stupid amounts. I am not a total math whiz. I do carry a calculator with me. Ideally, I'd have a palm pilot program where I could enter in a price by WHATEVER VOLUME and it would compute whether or not that was cheaper than I'd found elsewhere. So, if it was "Buy 2 for £3" and each was 245 g, then I'd like to know how that stacked up per kilo, kwim?:beer:0

I agree Busygirl - I am very worried about countries on the cusp of starvation. Anyone know whether if we have a better harvest and less set aside if things will improve. They should, in this country at least, by my reckoning.0
