Ohhh I am in Stockport.
Will go and have a look this week and see what I can get.
Aldi also had fruit bushes in too and hey were £1.99 for 3 - they were in selection packs.

I tried growing Gardeners Delight in a basket and they didn't do half as well as the Tumbler. The tumbling ones are naturally branching so they produce more tomatoes all over the plant rather than on a few trusses.
If you're only growing one or two plants, it'll probably work out cheaper to buy the plants partly grown (about 55-85p) rather than pay a couple of quid for 8 seeds.
I use old jumpers for basket liners or knit my own and add a round of plastic in the bottom. Anything that will hold water works just as well as bought ones.

If you are looking to bulk buy and stock up, try Infinity Foods in Brighton. They sell wholesale and you need to buy in quantities worth stockpiling.

There are 2 types of tomatoes- bush and cordon. The cordon type grows upright, needs support and wouldn't do very well in a basket. Bush types are shorter but spread out and should be fine to grow in baskets.0 -
HI
Referring to donna who was saying that she goes to lots of shops. I went to Aldi last night and wrote down and compared some of their prices to Asda and out of the things I compared only 2 were cheaper than Asda and then only by pennies. If you are spending a lot of time going to Aldi and x supermarket and y then do the shop 1 week and sit down on the net and work out exactly what you are saving if it is only pennies, then maybe the extra travel etc. would make it more expensive.
I also compared a sample shop at Asda and tesco and found it about 10% cheaper at Asda. I think mysupermarket is a good idea, but their substitions etc aren't always what you would pick and going through changing them can be v time consuming.
I am wondering if prices in this country will correct themselves a bit as the harvest comes in. With the floods last year a lot of crops were lost and farmers lost their winter feed, so had to buy in - hence the increased prices and I think there is a change to the set aside rules. I know this is a global problem as the BBC news this week are pointing out, but just wondering, I am not up to date on this so could someone informed on this situation let me know if they think this will happen.
I am v concerned on a global scale though with the Australian drought and the biofuel crops taking over valuable land. Do we still have EU mountains - always felt they were ridiculous when people are starving. Did you hear the man on BBC news last night talking about the 3 fold price increase in rice in 4/5 months?0 -
I used to shop at Aldi, but about a year ago I noticed their prices were going up quite steeply. Now I rarely shop there and stick to Lidl instead, their prices have gone up but not as steeply and I find their promotions pretty good.
Aldi don't appear to know what customer base to aim for, they've moved into a lot of specially selected goods with the price hiked up but still with the discount store format. It just doesn't work for me!0 -
i thought i was seeing things when i bought vegetable oil last week. 1 litre for £1.05 when it was 56p last month :eek:0

Somerfield currently have smaller tubs of clover on offer this week. They are half price - stock up if you have a Somerfield nearby.0

That shocked me too! But what was really strange was in Asda last night, their cheap olive oil is still £2.49 - soon it'll be cheaper to use posh oils than the standard stuff
Also noticed the offer cheese in there was slightly cheaper than normal, then noticed that it was 300g instead of the more usual 400g. Is it just me being a pessimist or does anyone else expect the price to rise but the size to stay smaller? :rolleyes:GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -
