"Pay as you drive" car insurance

Greetings everyone,

My car insurance will expire by the end of May. Started to look around and so far seems that the "pay as you drive" option will be the best for me.

- Last year annual premium was GBP457.00 (Norwich Union Direct)
- Renewal from the same insurer will cost around GBP400.00
- "Pay as you drive" will cost GBP200.00-250.00 (very low annual mileage, less than 1000).
- Am a bit limited at companies I can look at due to only 2 years in the UK, and wife holds an international driving license.

My question is this, does anyone have any experience with this type of insurance? bothers me a bit the fact that a device will be fitted to my car...

Thanks in advance!

Lovely Tom from RAC In Car Services fitted my box on Tuesday. He was the best advertisement for the service that could have happened, he treated my banger like she was a Lotus, did an excellent job and you can't tell that he's been there (except for the aerial box stuck on the windscreen - right in the right hand bottom corner - and the microphone - just above driver's door). He explained how to use the services and the sat nav (on free 30 day trial). The device itself is worth about £300, apparently.

It's so far cost me £75 for the initial fee and should be about £17 per month (I do about 4,500 miles per year, mostly motorway at weekends a couple of times per month).

The best thing for me is that it's fully comp insurance for about half the price of all the other tpft quotes :money:

    Hi

We've got this with Norwich Union and it's working out fantastic for us as we have very very low mileage. No problems with fitting the box and we are saving loads.:money: Would defo recommend it to anyone with low mileage.

    Thank you Emmylou and setmefree2.

I think I'm going to go for it. Great option for me as I'm doing such low annual mileage (will cost about 50% of regular comp, same coverage).

    Cheers

we were on the trial with norwich unions pay as you drive 4 years ago.
for us, the results were unconclusive so we decided to go elsewhere at renewal.
we still have the receiving equipment fitted to our car after many requests to remove it 3 years after the trial ended.

  • I am on PAYD as well, and it is a great saving for me, fully comp, breakdown, legal etc. Working out £150 a year or less so far. I would also look into signing up through quidco. I didn't take up the satnav option, as i think it works out cheaper with another device, ans i don't drive very far anyway.

Another "thumbs up" for NU PAYD from me

I have 2 cars with mileage spread across both - worked out good price for me especially as they offered mirrored NCD on my 2nd car

I found this thread as my son is looking to buy a car (translated as 'dad will buy me a car') and the quotes so far have been dreadful. I was actually looking for Norwich union threads as someone recommended the restricted driving insurance which I had never heard of, and found this instead.

Would be interested to know if anyone else has any comments to add on the scheme?

Got my first month's bill today: £18.91 :T

That's "base premium" of £11.53; itemised billing of £1.99 and ...

    338.7 miles = £5.39 :rotfl:

    I *LOVE* THIS INSURANCE!

This is my second year with PAYD and, for me (4000 miles per year) it has been superb. I have added on the Safe Speed option and the PAYG Satnav which I use very little but it's there when I want it and there's no expiry date! My premiums have never been over £12 per month and I'm very happy with it.
