  • What's the problem about having to 'learn Linux'? If you already know how to point and click with a mouse, then you already know all you need to know to get started and to use it. It isn't necessary to learn a programming language, or to use commands, although (as in DOS) the facility is there if you choose to.

So what do you have to learn? Only that you may find certain things in different places in different menus. But every time you 'upgrade' to a different Windows version you'll have to adjust to that in any case.

One of the big problems I've found is finding and installing drivers. I know some 'just work' but many don't. And getting them to work isn't just point and click. Before you get all hot under the collar, I like the idea of Linux; I just can't find the time to work on it.

What drivers? In my experience all the drivers are already built into the system, and with very few exceptions it isn't necessary to go round hunting for or installing any drivers, unlike some other systems that shall be nameless.

As for getting hot under the collar, I leave that to those who have to spend their time fixing their systems while I'm just enjoying mine.

In windows I had to find drivers for my graphics card and sound card, there are even sites totaly dedicated to windows drivers. In ubuntu everything worked and the few drivers for graphics cards which are a problem do have solutions many of them automated. Eg Envy and EnvyNg for some graphics cards (Nvidia and ATP). Broadcom wireless cards are often a nuissance in windows as well as in linux.

Netgear, HP and 3Com drivers in my case. Still no fixes AFAIK for my specific hardware. Although it does work with the majority of the hardware, unfortunately in my case it happens to be the quite important hardware that it doesn't.

I run linux under a VMWare session on my Windows Vista installation. I have no issues with drivers or anything. I use my linux session for surfing the internet in complete and utter safety and security. I use Vista for playing all my games and media sharing. If WINE ever gets to the point that I can put in a game and play it on a Linux build without all the messing about then I will scrap MS for good but at the moment point and click is far more convienient. Ubuntu 8 is superb and it is open source so all the more power to it, unfortunately it isn't the be all and end all yet.

Yeah the broadcom wireless driver is the one in my HP/Compaq lappie and it's a apin. Cant be bothered doing a wrap with it just yet though, it's good enough at the moment and better than in 7.10. Still puting BSD on my old pentium M laptop though.
Challenge time to force up my learning curve.
