Download and try it as a LiveCD. If everything works with that, you should have no problems with drivers when you do a full install.
The main problem area seems to be with wireless hardware. I've loaded 8.04 onto half a dozen PCs and never had a problem with it working "out of the box".
Took the plunge and installed Ubuntu 8.04 without a hitch. It's like having a new laptop. It's taking a while to get the hang of the architecture, but once I get the hang of the basics I'll be laughing. I installed Compiz Fusion too and that's spiced things up a bit.
I'd like to install a docking thingy, any recommendations from anyone? I've tried Advant Windows Navigator and didn't like it. I'm trying to figure out how to un-install it.

To remove programs :
Go to "system" / "Administration" / "Synaptic Package Manager"
click on "Search" and type in the name.
Once you find it just right click on it and select "select for removal" (it might say a few things have to be removed as well)
Then click "apply" and wait for a few minsLaters

Great, thanks a lot. Easy when you know how!
Now, any idea about that docking thingy?

Don't know about docking. There is a "google gadgets" for linux as well as a few others. I don't really use them so hopefully someone else could help you with it.Laters

I too have just downloaded Ubuntu 8.04 and I'm having a bit of a problem !!
My wifi isn't supported (its an Acer) but it say it can download the drivers, fine I thought, I'll just plug in a network lead connect to the router that way and away we go...
But no, it won't connect. The lead works under XP, but under Ubuntu it just sits there. I've gone into network setup and entered the gateway address but its still having none of it.
I'm sure its a great system, but can anyone, Please tell me how to get it to connect !!0 -

I have always installed with the network lead in and on 4 different laptops I have never had a problem. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Same here. I think when you boot up into Ubuntu it tries to find a DHCP server (usually built into your router) to get an IP address, default gateway and DNS address, and if that times out it assumes the port is dead.
Go into the network config, set the port to "Roaming mode", plug the Ethernet cable in and reboot - chances are it will then work fine.0
