The rumour in the articles I've read is that Windows 7 will be modular and completely stripped down and so you install really what you need to rather than the one size fits all that Vista (and XP) is. We'll have to wait and see but that sound like a good idea and solves the complaints of MS bloating its software.
Bout time MS did something right....I'd like to see Microsoft doing more with third party drivers to ensure they are of good enough quality to not cause system issues and that WHQL and Certified for X actually means something.
Bad drivers nearly crippled Vista.
What do you think open source is for....To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -

As they said in a magazine article I read recently the problem Microsoft has is that everyone says Windows is bloated but if they take out the bloat everyone complains becuase the software they bought 10 years ago no longer works.
Must have read same article I did."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Not in a position to develop official drivers, no accountability or fall back in the event something goes catastrophically wrong?
MinWin, according the the info floating around won't be making it into Windows 7 as the backbone. MinWin was a demonstration running a command line and if I recall was it IIS? It would perhaps have it's uses in a large array of servers, but for a desktop product not viable.
There's been a lot of feedback given to MS through a variety of channels to make the system more modular, which I do actually think would make it a lot better. Messenger, Live Mail and others are all falling under Live so it doesn't make sense to bundle it for a user to then have to update, it should be content on demand onto the operating system after installation, not during.0 -
Seeing as Microsoft are so "customer orientated" its a pitty they didn't take into consideration the customer when manufacturing their operating systems. They are more concerned with what they believe the customer needs. Its a pitty realy because when you take out all the rubbish you are left with something very user friendly and stable.
I agree, additional features should be additional. To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -

What do you mean? What 'rubbish'? What's missing from Windows that you want to see?0 -
It's a pitty there's no spellchecker0

I haven't read this entire thread so apologies if someone has already made this point - but in response to those saying that there is not enough software available or compatible with linux.
I would bet around 40% of home pc's are only ever used for web browsing and the occasional typed letter. So linux would have that in the bag. there is also photo/video editing software available so that would probably add another 10-15% of home users.
after running linux as a second OS for around a month or two i intend on using it as my main OS very soon, keeping XP only for games which i play very rarely these days. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

Hi Linux Buffs,
I have a Toshiba satellite A135-S2266 (1 gb RAM) that's creaking along with vista home basic. Will ubuntu 8.04 work out of the box or will I have to mess about getting drivers for the inbuilt wifi etc? I like the look of that Compiz see.......

Download and try it as a LiveCD. If everything works with that, you should have no problems with drivers when you do a full install.
The main problem area seems to be with wireless hardware. I've loaded 8.04 onto half a dozen PCs and never had a problem with it working "out of the box".0
