Mentat if it's an older lappie try xubuntu or even fluxbuntu HH as they become available. Uses less resources, Xubuntu is pretty good.

well I am a complete novice where Linux is concerned but thought I would try Ubuntu. I am amazed! It loaded in a couple of minutes from CD picked up my graphics card and even printed via my Canon IP4000 printer. Didn't try the Canon scanner.

I mainly get use my PC encoding so am interested in this aspect. I could get on the net dead easy. Am now getting Linux XP desktop and Kubuntu to try. I look at it this way:-

It takes all sorts to make up this world and it would not do if we were all the same! So live and let live what ever suits you use and peace and goodwill to all men. Would appreciate any tips on a suitable linux distro for video encoding and to know what might run MP3's or do I need to stick to Windoze for this?

    Video encoding....hmmmm you'll be lucky.

    avidemux is great for converting.
    and there's dvd rip.

But the best app Gordian Knot/AutoGK is still windows based. It's the last thing I've yet to be pleased with in Linux.

Hasn't he took a step back from Microsoft to be more involved with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, ie the worlds largest charitable organisation?

I was really hoping this thread wasn't going to be like this.

Time for me to nail my colours to the mast.

I love Linux, and wholeheartedly believe in its ideals. Software should be free(and by that I mean freedom, not price). Not only does it improve the breed, it makes it available to everyone.

I'm so sure Linux for home users is going to become a threat to Windows I'm currently starting a company to sell them. I'm not talking about it here (no spam!), but I truly believe there's going to be a revolution in home computer use really soon which Linux will be better suited to than Windows in its current form.

But I think the biggest challenge to Linux is not hardware support, or wordprocessing software, it's discussions like this.

People in the Linux community do an immeasurable disservice to their cause by the way they act around Windows users. It provokes equally stupid responses from the other camp.

Truth is, whatever my personal feelings are, I can tell you there's advantages to both. People that are very strongly aligned one way or the other don't tend to be that well informed.

It's the same as people talking about web browsers. They say "Try browser xyz, it's miles faster than browser abc!". What does that actually mean? Have they actually sat there with a stopwatch comparing them? Or have they found something they like, and found a thread written on a forum somewhere where a couple of other people said so, and confirmed what they thought?

My advice to Windows people that have heard of Linux, and want to find out more: Download Linux, and give it a go - you might like it. Like I say I reckon it's the future. I recommend Puppy, but others are available. If you get stuck, PM me. I like starting people off.;)

There's still an enormous amount of kinks that are holding Linux back from breaking onto the desktop market in any way that is going to be noticeable, and until the various distributions address these Linux as a replacement for Windows simply isn't going to happen for a long while.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing..
