  • OOoo who to pick?

3rd place would go to marbles and goldfish for giving me credit cards 15 years ago when I was on income support. I did work, and got £5 a week, but still got approved.

2nd place would go to MBNA for increasing my interest rate to just over 30% from 12%....and for not explaining how nearly £200 could be put on my card fraudulently when it had been in a drawer since I got it. I don't care it was written off, I want to know HOW it happened! No one had my pin, I didn't even know what it was!

1st place definitely goes to Paragon Finance. Who 2 years ago started hounding us for a debt we had never heard of, that did not appear on credit searches, was not there the year before when we got our 1st mortgage and that they could not/would not tell us where it had come from... but they wanted us to pay.
Only a solicitors letter stopped them and they just cancelled it all , but still no explanation or apology to this day!
The amount they had conjured up, that they finally told us in writing?
    £14,000!!!

Thanks Paragon, my Mum was terminally ill with cancer at the time you kept ringing, she is no longer with us and I so wish the same could be said for you:mad:

    ARE EVILLLLLL !!!!

    Hear Hear.

They are the most unhelpful bunch of winkers.

A few years ago, they bought out N&P, and they replaced our credit card.

Only it wasn't posted to us, we had to go to the nearest branch and pick it up.

Unfortunately that branch was over 500 miles away. They were holding it at the branch where we opened the account not where we moved to. The nearest branch will still over a 100 miles away anyway.

They compromised over much haggling, that they would send it to the nearer branch, but still wouldn't post it to us. We told them where they could put the card.

Strangely it turned up in the post 2 days later, but we decided at that point we were going to have nothing else to do with the Abbey.

Then a couple of years ago, I got seconded to London as a field engineer. On my first day I found myself needing loads of change for the meters. So I popped into a branch of Abbey and asked if they could change a twenty. The cashier abbruptly responded that they don't carry cash!

    A bank with no cash?

She didn't even ask if I was a customer! Barclays next door however, handed over prebagged pound coins without even questioning the transaction - now that's service!

As a student Barclays would have been my choice as the institution to close. I left uni with a small overdraft, less than £200, but starting work in a low paid job they took all my first wage. With the help of the CAB they reluctantly let me have some money for food and rent for the week whilst I quickly opened an account elsewhere. The experience left me bitter and angry with Barclays and since paying off that overdraft I've never entered a branch.

That was over 20 years ago now. In that time I've had a mortgage, loans, overdraft facilities, investment and share dealing accounts. None of these with Barclays.

It seems to me the banks have very short-sighted strategies of having a slice of the cake and eating it twice. Customers, however, have long memories so much so that the once big four are now a big six or eight banks even after all the mergers and takeovers in recent years.
Customers have voted with their feet. The big banks' response will be more takeovers rather than accept their ripoff charges, stinking customer service, reckless lending and high interest charges are stunting organic growth.

Perhaps Barclays have learned some lessons since I left them with just 11 pence in my account? They aren't ranking high in this name-and-shame thread. I would welcome the bad banks league table the FSA proposed, we would learn more about which banks are just paying lip service to customer service. Complaints to FOS rose 30% last year I understand, and reading these boards it comes as no surprise.

My current nomination would go to NatWest for their recent inhuman customer service, poor advice and slowness to cancel a standing order on my wife's account. No doubt they have financial targets to meet which overrides any ethics or morals they have towards their customers' livelihoods!

But I'd also nominate the FSA, OFT and our politicians (of all parties) for being spineless allowing UK banks to behave as they do and as toothless regulators. At the very least all bank staff should be made to wear masks to clearly identify who the robbers are :rotfl:
