cleaning engine oil from fabric or carpet

Options
Last year OH managed to loose the contents of a gallon carton of oil in the foot well of his car. Have been mopping it up ever since. Now hoping to sell car. So need to finally clean it up properly. What can I use that isn't going to be too 'chemically' Don't really think I can use a carpet shampooer because I suspect the next problem would be, ' how do I get engine oil out of my carpet shampooer'
Car an old banger so don't want to go to the expense of getting it valeted, just want it to look reasonable. Plus oil everwhere may make potential buyer think something more drastic has happened.
Thanks folks

    Hiya,

If you go into this site and find their internal search engine, type Motor Oil in the 'how do i clean' box and carpet in the 'from a' box. It should give you a few ideas.

I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are – Milton Berle

Could you put a cheap car mat down to disguise it?

  • Might backfire if prospective buyer looked underneath : (
Have checked out http://www.howtocleananything.com/ it's brilliant, definitely book marking it. Though some of the products need translating. I assume 'dish washing soap' is washing up liquid.
    Better get scrubbing.

    As like with,

Use white wine to remove red wine stains.

Use petrol to remove the oil.

I think the smell of the petrol would put off a buyer more so than the oil stain.

I would get a car valeting company to look at it. When I sold my car last year I had an internal valet done which included a complete shampoo of seats and carpets, only cost about £30 and looked like new.

The answer to oil stains on a driveway is to sprinkle cat litter over it, leave overnight then sweep up and wash away - the oil is absorbed by the cat litter.

Maybe you could try this on the car carpet?

 Help please! I've just been out in the garage fixing the heatin (all proud of myself for doing that) but must have stepped on something which resembles blue tac consistency but is black and gloopy like tar  Anyhow I didnt notice it on my slipper and have walked it up cream carpet in all and into lounge. Managed to wipe it off laminate in bedroom where I noticed it first. Can anyone Please help me with getting rid of the stain on my carpet? I've tried 1001 carpet cleaner and stardrops but it just seems to be spreading it. I tried hovering to see if they were loost bits but apparently not

Thanks for you help in advance
