Yes, but you then have to process them by boiling the jars with the apple sauce in - this is called bottling here, canning in the States. They will go off fairly quickly if you don't. There's a step-by-step guide here (scroll down the page). You don't have to put them through a mill like they suggest - just make it like you normally would - use your own recipe - and follow the instructions for heating in boiling water. They have used proper Mason jars with separate lid and ring, but it should work with ordinary lids just as well - boiling the jars seals them so no air can get in and spoil the food - and the lid should make that popping noise when you first undo it that you get with new jars of jam/marmalade/pasta sauce.
  • Well I boil the apples, sterilise the jars, pour the hot applesauce in them, let them cool and then, refridgerate.

    We are still alive.:D

LOL! I've got the world's smallest fridge, which is why I need stuff that'll sit on the shelves for years without incident!

If you've got enough freezer space, you can just bung it in there, of course...

You can also bottle fruit in the oven rather than boiling it. We have tried it once, and it seemed to work though haven't had the fruit on the shelves for that long yet - ask me in a year!

I am making scallops and blackpudding for christmas day starter and OH has just announced that he would like apple sauce or chutney with it.
Living in the back of beyond it is not an option to go out and get a jar (christmas shopping has already been done) so I am looking for a recipe to make a small quality for one meal.
I have cooking apples in, white wine vinegar, sugar, butter, red onions.

Anyone give me an idea of qualities or ratios for making chutney type relish? Spice wise I have dried ginger in but not a lot else out of the ordinary - cinnamon poss, salt, pepper, italian herbs, thyme, rosemary.
  • apple sauce..

peel, core and chop apples. ( 1 lge or 2 small cooking apples)

    put in a bowl

add a tiny bit of water.

    add sugar

    then ping in the microwave..

    as simple as that:D
