Could anyone give me some directions for HM Apple Sauce? Or direct me to an existing thread - couldn't find one?

Also, one I've made the Apple sauce does it freeze well?

    Thanks!

    Hi Icey,

I've added your thread to the existing one on making apple sauce. I find it will keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks and it does freeze well and just needs a good stir once it's defrosted.

All recipes I find online seem to be American so use 'cups' as measurements and don't specify how many apples
I am new to making my own jams and chutneys but loving it! :j

The River Cottage Preserves book has a recipe for quince and apple sauce. I'm sure you could adapt that. It uses the hot water bath method to preserve it. The recipe says 500g quince and 500g of bramleys, (peeled, cored and chopped) so you could just use a kilo of apples. The juice of half a lemon and 125g granulated sugar.
Put the lemon juice, apples, sugar and 500ml of water in a pan and cook for 10-15 minutes until the fruit is really soft, then beat it with a spoon until it's smooth or put it through a sieve.
Put your jars in the oven at 140c/gas mark 1.
Put the fruit back on the heat and bring it to the boil making sure you stir it so it doesn't catch and burn. Take off the heat and pour straight away into the warmed jars and put the lids on. Put a folded tea towel in the bottom of a deep pan and put the jars on top then add warm water so it covers the jars and bring up to simmering point (88C) and simmer for 5 mins. Take the jars out of the pan and place on a wooden surface or folded tea towel and leave until cold. Check the seals, use withing 12 months.

I think that bramley apples are the best for apple sauce! I enjoy pink ladies just to eat as they are.

;) Felines are my favourite ;)

I like to use granny smiths or bramley apples and the recipe is simple.
peel, core and chunk your apples. then add enough sugar to coat them. a tablespoon of water and put them over a medium heat. cook them and watch carefully as they will turn from chunks to mush in about two minutes! as soon as they reach the consistency you like take off the heat and stir in about a half ounce of butter. DONT use marge or butter substitute. just leave it out if you dont want the butter. this is the traditional apple sauce used in our family.
